AMD Radeon HD 8970 - 30% to 40% Faster

If this is true then its really good news.

The most powerful single-GPU card could be the Radeon HD 8970, with a 30-40% performance boost over current generation of cards.

...and the wheel goes round and round.

Now I just want to know if they'll be releasing these cards pre-hollidays or next year.

*meh, article is two months old.

Could this be the 7970 atomic listed by sapphire a few months ago?

The performance is speculatory.

AMD has had Sea Island tapped out since June DIGITIMES first reported it.

Sea Island have already been shown in the drivers i beleive from a few revision back so e-samples have to be around.

I suspect that AMD is going to position the 8000 series to be the "First Windows 8 GPU" just for bragging right and do the whole bios upgrade again next cycle to annoy Nvidia all over again.

It'd be nice if people don't make this thread a juvenile NV vs AMD thread. I'm not a moderator but i know i speak for a lot of folk when i say it's very tiring reading comments like "you Nvidia fanbois mad?"

Give it a frickin' break man? It's not funny and it's not clever.

I'd love to know dates. GK110 was not touted as a desktop release but if AMD released a significantly faster card then maybe NV will bring daddy kepler to desktop after all.

I'd like some concrete news on this...

I'd love a 8970, as long as they are beast and don't cost a kidney or half a liver.

Interesting point was made. Windows 8 and HD 8000, this would be a marketing move to make it seem as though the HD 8000 GPU's are Special Windows 8 GPU's. Smart move if AMD releases them with Win 8.

Will I finally replace my HD 6970 with one of these new puppies. YUP, if the $ is right.

If that happens I can see nvidia quickly renaming the current 6 series to 7 (670 -> 760) and then rebadging the GK 110 as an 8 series part.

But yeah... a Windows 8 of an AMD FX-8150, 8 Core Processor, 8 GB of Ram, HD8970, 800Watt PSU, and a big F**K-off spider painted on the side of a red glowing window case is something that I can definitely see happening.

My guess is this will go similarly the last few releases. AMD will be out first and price ABOVE current market options. I'd say there's a 50% chance nvidia doesn't even lower prices until it comes time to clear stock months later.

Isn't it a little early for speculation? It's a dime a dozen these pre-release statements. EVERYONE knows that the next-gen of cards will always be anywhere from 20%-40% faster than previous generation's. But I guess those guys need the website hits to keep em alive...oh well

Everything seems to be happening so fast.

I'm still on my 5870 and enjoying the crap out of it. I've yet to hit a wall in games, yet here we are 3 generations up and where are the amazing looking games to take advantage of them...

Max Payne 3 was nice I'll give it that but if we are on the 8 series I expect (At least anticipate) better.

Crysis still brings systems to their knees. And if you really want a system killer, try out Metro 2033, you will not be disappointed by its level of detail I promise you. It will make your 5870 beg for mercy.

Performance boost is a given, so all I want to know about this 8xxx series is how much will the 88xx and 89xx models cost

30 to 40% is actually not that much tbh. It would be like a 6970 vs a 5870

That's why you are the man! I hope this news is true! I want too buy a 7xxx amd or a 6xx nv to replace my 5850's... I want to go back to a single card.. I just can't pay what they want for the new cards.. I'd love to have this 8970... but seeing the 7970's came out at around $550.. I can only hope this card drives down current gen prices.

Will i finally replace my 2x 4850's I hope so, but every time im getting ready to take the plunge I hear about this stuff! I'm to much of a frugal person to just buy and be happy

I'm going to guess and say performance will be 45% better from 7970 to 8970 and price will be about $25 more base price...

Crysis only brings system to their knees because it isn't efficient. Don't get me wrong though, I still use it as a stress test on my 470, though, I find it doesn't stress the memory enough, even with 16xQ AA. For that very reason, I have moved onto benching using Crysis 2, as that fills the memory right up. Whether or not it stresses the card as much, in terms of power pulled, is another thing, but it does bring it up to full utilization.

I only wish BF3 had a benchmarking tool, as that would be a good test. Does Metro offer a benchmarking tool?

On the topic of the new HD8000 series cards; I don't think I will wait for either sides next generation, as there will always be a newer gen just around the corner. I figure I will offload my GTX 470 before it depreciates any further and just grab a GTX 670, even if the release of the HD8000 series causes nVidia to drop prices. It is always interesting to see what the next gen may bring, though.
