Max Payne 3 was nice I'll give it that but if we are on the 8 series I expect (At least anticipate) better.
I know, I just upgraded to an HD6950. I really don't need the extra horsepower at my resolution but the 2GB VRAM is nice and more futureproof, plus I got it pretty cheap. I usually stick with my GPUs for about 2 generations so I'll surely upgrade to an HD8000...when the HD9000 series get out...

I'm going to guess and say performance will be 45% better from 7970 to 8970 and price will be about $25 more base price...
Do what I do, always skip a generation, then it makes it worth to upgrade if you compare the performance.

I went from a HD 2900 to HD 3870 to HD 4870 (x2 Crossfire) skipped HD 5870 and got a HD 6970. Skipped the HD 7970 and might move in for the HD 8970 kill.

My GTX460 has been begging for upgrade. tho it still serves me well.

Lets see what HD8xxx will bring when it comes out, i was not in a harry to switch to any current gen offering the price was just not right, plus the availability of current gen cards was so low, till today in our country we don't have any current gen cards in the market

How does the whole update thing get coordinated?

Like if they knew how to do the 8 series now why didn't they do whatever made the 8 series so fast to teh 7 series? Lack of technology? They didn't know how to then? Or is it just basically for the money and they could be producing 9 series cards right now?

My guess is board engineering. I think they get GPU first then they design/test the board/GPU

You can wait forever for this stuff. If you have the money be done with it. It's a fairly long time before they'll come out anyway.

I really don't expect this to come till next year. I would be shocked if it came out pre holiday times. They first said it would be coming out in mid summer, then late summer, now pre holiday. Next it will be 1 quarter... and so on.

I am pretty happy with my 7970 but 40%... I Think I would take the 8870 if it matched my 7970's power.

So it will end up 15-25% faster than 680.

And then Nvidia in 6 months will release a card that's 15-25% better than AMDs offering?

What a load of rubbish I want cards that 50% improvement AT LEAST.

Getting sick of this BS now

I agree 100% If they priced the 8970 at $399 for one,I will buy it.Just $1100 + for the 7970 and only get 5% performance over my 6970 crossfire(which is with in 2% of a 6990)was not very good update.Come to think of it was there not a post Monday or Tuesday about 7000 series price drops?

Not if they come with the Windows 8 release that is scheduled for October 26, 2012. Just in time for the B4 Christmas shopping

so let we say it's 15%-20% faster than GTX680, so 10 FPS increase in BF3 didn't worth extra 200$.

Yea, they drop the prices on the 7950's to grab performance tier between the 660ti and the gtx670's. I believe the 7870's and the 7850's also dropped in price. I still think the 7950's are to high, but with this news it would seem they will go down more in the near future.

Radeon 6970/50 -> Dec 15, 2010

Radeon 6990 -> Mar 8, 2011

Radeon 7970 -> 9 Jan, 2012 (Paper launch in December)

If they were to follow their schedule the HD 7990 should have been already launched.
I strongly doubt they will release it.

Anyway I expect the HD 89xx launch in December, atleast a paper launch like the 7970

your a regular, you should know full well how things go and jumping from xfired 58xx's i will get a 50% jump using either camps latest GPU, in short not going to happen for someone upgradeing every Gen , at all as well you know.

looking forward to Amds 8xxx generation, as im hopeing to up my folding ppd whilst reducing wattage and even moar frames per games.

bit harsh on baggpipes imho erocker btw

There was a removed post that was nothing more than a pointless fanboi slap in the face. TPU loses it's credibility the more people post their 'opinions' that are nothing more than schoolyard insults.

This is a well established and respected tech site, if people want to piss all over other people, they should go to 'general nonsense' or someplace else.

I've seen a fair number of established members leave this site over the degeneration of it's forum members posts. Maybe I'm getting old (at 38) but it seems so utterly childish to revert to brand loyalty insults.

Then when you test a moderator? Well, don't poke shit if you want to keep clean fingers.

Just curious to know you think that would be a bad move. I don't see them getting released until perhaps Mid to late December. But I am sure AMD wouldn't want to eat up the 7900 series success so soon.
