Just picked up Norton Internet Security 2012 for $6.00, thoughts?
Read some reviews on it, PC Mag and a few other websites gave it pretty high ratings and better protection over MSE which is what I use now. Anyone here own it? Any tips for settings welcome.
(Got it for $6 from Buy.com because I had some spare points to use and thought what the hay, better safe than sorry) |

Good deal I guess. I mean Norton gets a bad rap for it's past versions being resource hogs. I hear it has gotten alot lighter. Still couldn't me to use it :P
I'm happy enough with MSE, simple, "idiot proof" I don't have to think about it.

You could do a lot worse with $6.. hehehe All jokes aside.. It shouldn't be bad if you plan to upgrade it after it expires... If not then don't forget to grab there "Norton removal tool" to completely remove there product. The only real Norton product I've ever really liked is "Ghost". I like Symantec's "Backup Exec" as well, but it's not really a Norton product.

Thoughts? In all honesty I'd of recommended you get kaspersky.. Not saying your norton won't do the job. But it never has for me in the past.. Which is why I now use Kaspersky.

If you want to get warez n porn etc your better off using a old machine. Smart Browsing and keeping Windows and other programs updated still is needed despite all these "protections"

Best $6 spent to worst waste of computing power ever, depending on who you ask and which reviews you read. Personally, I can't be bothered because MSE is convenient and has not failed me yet.

That's my take as well. I mean if MSE wasn't free and easy I wouldn't be running anything anyway. Smart surfing and passive protection like Spybot/Noscript/Ghostery is enough protection for me. Any suspicions I just pay a visit to Housecall for piece of mind.

My thoughts are internet security programs are a joke. I get these thoughts through having many computers over the years, at home and at my business, some running software and some not. Granted I do have this software running on "important" computers, though I am confident they aren't any safer than some computers without it. I'm not saying that others should do without it, just my own choice, especially with computers that are more for gaming/recreation/etc..

MSE and Avast would have been a smarter choice

I was just talking generally about security software causing slowdowns. They all do it to some degree and how high you crank up the settings can make a big difference to the performance hit, especially with the heuristics.
