A milestone? Nostalgia?

Mods: If you consider this spam, please delete. It's my 5,000th post. Joined in Dec 2005, over 6.5 years ago. Back then, I was using an ATI X850 and modded NP 9800 on an overclocked Celeron on an Abit IC7-G and AG8 MB.

I don't know if any of you recall this from back in Dec 2005:
Quote:
First - for you who don't know this, about 4 days of posts were lost because of an unfortunate techpowerup.com server failure (I feel the pain, especially for the crew that keeps this awesome site going!)...
http://www.techpowerup.com/forums/showthread.php?t=7225

Back then, there were no banner ads (and despite the introduction of them, they are subtle and don't invade threads like some other sites). This site had kept it's flavor, the forum software has been great, and most of all the community is very welcoming with a culture of it's own. I just wish GN was still part of TPU

So... in short, thanks to W1zzard and all the mods who work thier asses off for news, content, humor and keeping things real, and just regular members... like me.

I can't believe how much faster hardware has gotten... I remember when I joined with my modded Radeon 9550 on an OC'd Sempron, and a rig with 1GB of ram.

That was screaming for back then lol.

Fell into this place with my IC-7(sitting behind me right now mostly cannibalized as a doorstop)and a 9800 Pro looking to make it an XT. Became a bit of a "guru" on the "can it be an XT?" and never left.

Agreed Sasqui! still one of the best sites and communities going! We wouldn't have been this long if it wasn't

W1z and the crew make this place special

Nice, 2004... you got in here right from the start.

I had the 9800 NP, must have been one of the last moddable ones sold on Newegg, fuses checked out and the softmod worked great.

Right behind me at work is the AG8 in-box and 630 CPU. I have no idea what to do with it ;P

Hehe yeah my IC-7 is in some cheapo case still got the Zalman cooler on it(think it's running my 3.2 Prescott), X800XT in the AGP slot, some RAM lying in the bottom of the case. Just need to stick a PSU and an HDD in there and it would be alive again. But then what? Doorstop it shall remain...

i'm quite sure we had banners at that time, but not at the forums. we still dont have any forum ads.

my view on the whole advertising thing is: annoying ads turn users away -> less users -> less users looking at ads -> less money -> death spiral

Truth be told, this is one of the reasons why i like this forum so much more then others. Plus we don't need to pay $1 to register/post

Aside from the obvious reasons

+1 I could have sworn you intro'd them in 2006 or 2007, but then again they were so subtle, perhaps I didn't notice, kudos.

Whats TPUs secret then? Is the community that diligent at reporting SPAM and the staff that efficient at removing it that keeps the place clean & tidy?

Obviously you don't have to reveal the secret. That would be counterintuitive lol

Well except for those retarded members who get bored and report MOD posts as SPAM to pass the time You know who you are!

I dunno about you m1dg3t but I report spam as soon I see it. I like to think we "police ourselves" in most cases. No trash cluttering up this place.
Ask Wiz about my recent Youtube "clean up" Across the web I'm gonna stick up for TPU! No messing with this place!
I think I have been a member here longer than any other forum on the web and that means something to me. I have watched people come and go, all the evolution, good times and bad. This is place I am proud to be a member of

Wizzard added a spam filter that the mods can see. That combined with member vigilance, TPU is a pretty clean place.

lol@ reporting the mod.

Sasqui, well done for reaching 5000 posts. I lurked around here since shortly after the site started in 2004 and always found TPU useful, but didn't register until 2007. That's a real shame since I would have had history back to 2004 which would have been great.

That is actually exactly what I did... I would always come to download the utilities and read the news. When I first signed up, I did not even go to the forums, just the news posts and the latest topic bars.

I spend more time on TPU these days than I do on facebook.

Lol.. Great thread Sasqui..

Yeaaapp.. I joined when I was using a prebuilt dell (trying to shift from console gaming), that couldn't even play age of empires 1, at the worst possible settings.

No you see, if you'd spent more time on FB, that would be just sad. FB is like a 24/7 reality TV soap opera.
