Keyboards with Mechanical Switches are the ultimate ones for gaming, dome type switches are for everything pretty much but tend to be slower in feedback for gaming plus dont support 6 key or N Key rollover

Seriously, what is a "gaming" keyboard" marketing and PR singing aside?

Wires, yeah.
Expensive but nice that one, yeah!
Mechanical keys are traditionally favorited by WRITERS.

depends on what mechanical switch used, some are touch typists which require very little pressure and travel to actuate commands.

Mechanical Keyboards are the best for anything. Typing, Gaming, etc. Rollover also depends on which connection your using. PS2 or USB. With my DAS Professional Mechanical if I use USB it gets like 8 key roll over while with PS2 I get full.

Don't even bother with Logitech keyboards. They suck really bad.

I bought a "gaming" keyboard since not many keyboards had back lighting. I got this:

I always say this...gaming keyboards are a gimmick.
They all have to have the a-typical layout otherwise they're no longer a keyboard (which is for typing..)

Razer Naga + Ideazon(Steel Series now) Fang was the best combination.
You might get lucky and find the Fang on ebay somewhere as it's discontinued.

There are a few more products out there like that but the Fang was the best.

Alternatively, (and this is an exception to my ruling above), Steel Series still make a version of the 'MERC' keyboard which is the same thing as an Ideazon fang, but attached to the side of a normal keyboard.

I'd provide some pictures, but browser playing up at work.

Not all gaming keyboards have atypical layout, for example most of the gaming oriented mechanical keyboards. Yes, gaming keyboards can be a bit gimmicky, but on the other hand, most other luxury goods are gimmicky anyway, so its no different. After owning the G11 I believe that the most important difference between keyboards are whether the switches are mechanical or not: I can perform just as well using a cheapo HP/Dell.

I would compile it like this:
- Macro keys = not gaming. I use my G19 macros for work
- Backlight = not gaming. This is an allround feature.
- Mech keys = not gaming.
- headphones plugs = not gaming
- USB ports = not gaming
- LCD display (G15/G19, etc) = allround feature (I at least never use it for games, but for monitoring, pictures and news wire...

- Keys' aspect changes to suit specific games, removing letters, adding icons... = gaming
- More or less revolutionary Layout changes to make WASD'ing easier (like Fang) = gaming
- Spaceship, mechwarrior or submachinegun looks etc = gaming

If I was a gamer only, and not an allround computer user, I would get something like a Fang+mouse+SMALLEST POSSIBLE KEYBOARD (only for login and mail purposes).

Of course it totally depends of WHAT kind of games, Formula 1, flight sim, BF3 and role playing have totally different needs. So we return to the beginning: Can we call a keyboard a "gaming" one?

Sorry the fang sucked ass.. Crappy spongy rubbish with 1/2 the keys in the wrong places. What annoyed me the most about the fang was while gaming i had to use the keyboard as well as i found there was way to many keys above the hand.

And being able to change the key layout for gaming is a must for a gaming keyboard even more so for a lefty as a lot of games come with fixed key settings.

As for back lighting it's nice but yes it's not a requirement but is nice to have if your in to dark type games Like Skyrim Fallout 3.

I have seen a Fang only once on photo, it is just an example, but good to know it sucks, as expected.
