I'm running a way-overkill water loop on a non-oc i3 2120, which is fine for pretty much everything at stock clocks. OC would only increase power consumption, increase fan noise and contribute to global warming
![]() The HD5870, though, is overclocked, since it is just about fast enough for most modern games on full details. OC makes the difference from "sometimes too slow" to "absolutely enjoyable". |

I OC the Ram as well if possible, being an Intel user for a long time I can say that RAM speed always played a big part in the performance. I also OC'd a PSU before
![]() I'm no OC guru but as long as you keep voltages/temps in check and the clock is tested stable, there is no reason you can't keep it set there... The first box I built is still clipping along 8yrs later with a 600Mhz bus OC and a 100Mhz RAM OC I gifted it to a family member and they couldn't be happier

I nave 2 of my six crunchers overclocked and another one with 2 cores unlocked. I oced the 2 to see how much of a boost in ppd it actually gives wcg compared to a rig with the same cpu running at stock clocks. Also seeing would it be worth it to buy a faster proc of the same technology.

i like to do about a 5% overclock to make the cost of spending nearly $1000 on a cpu and gpu alone less depressing.

Yeah I always overclock CPU and GPU. Not really because I need to but just because I can. I don't put the effort into that I used to. My days of "finding the limits" are over.

I always oc until cooling stops me. Sometimes it is voltages, mainly for the cpu, sometimes i hit a frequency wall, mainly the gpu, but most of the time i reach the limit of what a waterblock can do.
And as with every folder, each ppd counts!

Yes, only cpu.
I don't like oc graphics card since I fried my former 4850 oc'd doing f@h 24/7 for about 3 months. In fact, when I've done it, I've notice that oc gpu core helps to improve performance much more than oc gpu ram, oc gpu ram has almost no impact on performance. |

CPU,GPU,RAM. I like eye candy in games and hi-res monitors. I don't want to be upgrading all the time so any extra performance I gain from OC'ing allows me to run smoother or better in game graphics.

It's more for the bragging right then performance since it does almost nothing in games, CPU at 3.8GHZ with the turbo turned off (stock voltage), the 7870 has duel bio's so the other bio's will hit 1100MHZ, but I hardly use it, just basically for bench marking. I'm happy with the 7870 performance, my screen will only do 1920x1080 at 60hz, and at stock mostly everything is 60+ fps, very little point to overclocking, except for the minimum fps's . . . . even then.

No OC needed for me
I am very happy with the performance of all my rigs at stock clocks and I have only oc'ed them when I first got the new items (cpus, ram and gpus) just to verify they would oc within reason, never really pushed any parts very hard.
No where near the max on anything. Basically I figure any oc I did/do verify the parts are of good quality and should give me a long life. Parts are way too costly to beat the krap out of them, for me. And after quick testing the parts, right back to stock. Hell, I still run E8400s and E8500s in a couple machines and they perform great even today with a lot of games with decent gpus. And I still run AMD AM2+ 4800 Brisbanes in a couple systems, for spreadsheets and work stuff. But I have good gpus in all my machines, helps speed them up. All depends what the machine is used for.

Heh, tell that to my Q6600 @ 3.5 GHZ since 2007 mid, it has yet not crashed and i can't justify an upgrade as i haven't come across a single game that has felt slow due to CPU bottleneck.

Did i forgot to tell you how fast my HD 7970 feels at 1080P ?
![]() Also, as far as stability goes my OC have always been complimented with better/custom cooling. I also like to play a lot with custom designing (Usually ugly) for better cooling. Here is one example - My 8800 GT (Still alive and kicking at 850 MHZ) with Intel CPU cooler mod - http://techreport.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=29&t=70545 (Apologies to mod, if they don't permit other forum reference, i will remove the link if thats the case) Last edited by jigar2speed; Sep 11, 2012 at 06:07 AM. |
