Maybe go for an APU? can't see you getting much better performance than that unless you snag a good used mid range tower and monitor on ebay.

You need everything? Can nothing be salvaged, DVD, case etc? Mouse/kb? Windows license?

EDIT: I would at least look at used monitors. If it is gaming, I'd specifically look at 19 inch 1280x1024 monitors, they can usually be had for quite cheap.

EDIT again: Also look at clearance sales. Here's a decent system for that kind of money.

EDIT: Forgot about optical drive!

EDIT: AND PSU I don't know what's on with me today. :

Not sure if this helps, i just put together a budget rigg,
80$ asus p8z77m
50-60$ 500~tt psu
core i53570k 230$
1x4 generic ram-22$[until i can upgrade]
had an old laptop 500gb hdrive, but they are cheap anyways.
at least with this gear, can use hd4000 for games on low res, and have options to get betr gpu etc later. it was bit over 400$= maybe 200-250pounds?
found an old comp on hard rubbish and theres my case lol!

Leaves a bit for monitor and other periphs, and has the basis for a quite powerful machine when more funds come .i nearly went amd apu tho, if your keeping it for a few years, then thats why i went this way.

No, taxes would make it £400. Way way over budget.

It's for a friend's brother, I'll see if he can extend his budget or check if he's got a spare monitor he can reuse.

I could also sell him my old 4870 for like £45

That's not a bad idea, the build I put together above is good for a budget gaming rig inc monitor if he wants all new parts which with a £300 budget is going to be hard, if he can get a monitor from somewhere then that £300 would buy him a fair bit more GPU power.

If he has an existing case, Optical drive and power supply use those till he can afford to replace those parts

I think I may have an old DVD RW drive somewhere, but it's IDE. I've also got an old "EZ Cool" PSU, but I don't trust the brand lol

youd need a SATA adapter for that drive unless if you find a board that has an IDE port on it.
