Xbox 360 Rebuild/Repair?

I have this VERY old xbox 360 casing, heatsinks, and screws from an xbox I was trying to fix for a friend but never did, and the motherboard for it is bad with a GPU port issue because he dropped the xbox with the video cable in. I can get a replacement motherboard, DVD drive, and power brick on ebay. Obviously it probably wouldn't be a worthwhile project, but i have this stuff and I thought it would be fun. Id Sell it at the end after I make sure it runs haha.

So should I do it or not. Im hoping to not have to spend much more then $75 on parts. If I do do it though ill make a project log, as this could get interesting.

Project logs are great and would love to see it. It you have the time, I'd say go for it!

Add: Obviously price is the determining factor. If its a lot of $, nah, unless money is flowing well. If its financially feasible, yeah.

Money is flowing VERY well haha. I mean if I do sell it I do not plan On making a profit at all. Itll be an older mobo and Slims are out now and already so cheap so. I want to do it just because I have the stuff to do it and money. Id just hate to throw out what I have when I could use it for a spare xbox and sell it later on.

I could also do LED fans and cut a window into the side of the casing.

Alright so I now know what I need.

Motherboard/DVD Drive USB
Power Brick 203w
Hard drive(Just a 60GB I think)

Heres the motherboard DVD drive PCB im looking at buying.

Looks like its working, and since you have the parts/ability to get them and the know how, go for it. Most important is time of course invested in.

I'd say the only reason not to is that you may not get out what you put in, but that's most things in the pc and tech world.

Looking forward to your build log!!!

Turn the entire casing into a miniITX computer? A little more expensive than the replacement parts for the 360, but a mini ITX built into a 360 case with a window cut in would be pretty cool.

i just happen to have an xbox 360 motherboard laying behind my monitor lol... i was hoping to repair it.. .some day

edit: I know it needs baking. I tried the xclamp mod but no go. it red ringed on my while playing mass effect 2 a couple years ago. I have another xbox now, but i need a dvd drive for it... i just can't win lol. I'll probably just get the other dvd drive and swap the pcb on the drive so i don't have to flash the rom on the drive.

The problem with that is, the DVD drive needs to be the exact same one. You can't swap out a PCB from a Lite-On drive to a Toshiba.

I know about that... I meant order a replacement of the same type... and just swap the boards since i don't have a VIA based controller needed to flash the .bin At least that's how this particular drive is... I've done it before but that was with my Asrock 4CoreDual-VSTA mobo.

If your talking about an old xenon, I would either not do it or if you do do it, make your own case(and have fun with that) and use different heatsinks on the gpu and its memory, the xenons are very prone to failure and most of the replacement boards are repair jobs usually from someone baking the board, and baking the board only makes the problem go away temporarily and theres a limit to how many times you can do it.

just be careful who you get the parts from.

What would be cooler, since you have the funds, is to put the Xbox 360 hardware in a stand alone system with nice cooling and a nice HDD. That way you don't have to really worry about overheating and you can customize it to your liking. I mean it has been done, but it would be cooler than just rebuilding an old 360 (unless you plan to make modifications to that case). Could sell the 360 casing and screws online to make up some cost of the other parts.

yeah its an older one that doesn't have HDMI. I had the same one a while back till i got my Elite that worked perfectly til it E74'ed haha.

yeah I was looking at Zephyr revisions, but they all have HDMI and my xbox casing does have the HDMI capability unless i cut the slot out of the case.

Ebay bro, Ebay.

I can get a Falcon board and hitachi DVD drive PCB for the same price as the xenon. Just there might be a problem with the fact that the casing I have doesn't support the HDMI, and im not sure my zephyr revision cooling would work on the falcon board.

Good luck man, I tried to sell a full system on ebay last year and finally sold it for 80$ shipped after lowering the price three times.

They are not really worth the time anymore with talks of new consoles and almost every kid in the world having one.

I wouldn't solder anything, unless I found a new AV video port, but that might be impossible to find.

Id have to spend about $100 if I were to do this. I actually need a few more things then I thought.
