Q8300 vs new trinity apu's vs i5
i'm looking for an upgrade on my stock Q8300 to something newer and the price of the A10 5800k and a decent motherboard to go with it seem in a reasonable price range
now, how does the new apu's compete with an i5? it would only cost £60 more than the A10 to get a core i5 2500k, how much of a performance increase would i be looking at from the A10->i5 core i5+mobo(£250): http://www.scan.co.uk/products/intel...che-95w-retail http://www.scan.co.uk/products/asroc...dvi-d-hdmi-atx A10+mobo(£190): http://www.scan.co.uk/products/amd-a...hz-100w-retail http://www.scan.co.uk/products/gigab...dvi-d-hdmi-atx |

They do not compete with I5 (I3 maybe) I would hop on with I5/I7 if you want a strong gaming machine.

Maybe that would be a question for cadaveca that just reviewed the new A10 line.

APUs are meant for sub-$500 builds. If you have a larger budget, you might want to consider other options.
In such configs, AMD intends you to buy the 6670 as well, which makes the AMD option much better all around than the 2500k(6670 should be about £50-£60.). In that situation, with no further budget except for drives, case, PSU, and OS, AMD has everything covered, while to game on the 2500k, you need to also buy a GPU. The APU combo is really meant for HT or office-type use, with gaming included, so 720p gaming, on HDTV, sure. 1080p, some titles with adjusted details will play fine. Some might struggle a bit.

Basically, go A10 if you want to use the onboard video because AMD's onboard video just destroys Intel's, go i5 if you are using a dedicated video card.

But given the two options you presented there is only a £60 price gap, so it's Intel i5 all day. |

If your going to be gaming then the I5 is the only logical choice in my opinion, the 2500K kills anything besides AMD's top cpu and is worth the extra cash.\
Is there a reason you can't overclock your Q8300 though? What is the rest of your system like? |

On the CPU department there's really no competition between the A10 and the 2500K. If you want to game the A10 can help you until you'll realize that it just sucks and you'll eventually buy a discrete card and then realize that the CPU will suck.
So, if you don't game get the 2500K. If you game get the 2500K and a GPU. It costs more but you won't flush it down the toilet next year. If you managed to live with the Q8300 so long then get a proper CPU and not a CPU that thinks it can game but forgets that it's a CPU in the first place. |

He's stating a general fact. Its well known that the FX 4170 is the best AMD gaming cpu atm.

yeah, I know, that's why I'm pointing out that the FX-8150 isn't the best gaming CPU from AMD.

And the arguing begins
......oh how ![]() Anyways if you're just after a HTPC go with the AMD APU route, if not and want more gaming grunt hardware go with the i5 2500K and a decent video card
