Anyone mods psu ?

Hi.

I'm the type of low-budget guy who like to build his own stuff. So when it comes to PSU I like to mod them.
Taking the core of a good one from a single 80mm fan unit and drop it in a burned psu case with 120mm fan ie.

Any of you guys do stuff like that or recap them ?

This thread may have been posted already I don't know but I'm doing it at this moment so wanted to share.

Since the time I was shocked by a 800w psu I know now how it works :P There was a leak between the two metallic coolers and when I've touched them I got a nice shock.

I'm scared when it comes to playing around with power supplies, too much room for error. I'll save that type of work for my electrician uncle who actually knows what he's doing. :-)

damn, son! i used to CUT our 120mm fan slots in them cheap PSU cases all the time mann!!
i even modified one 450W PSU into a low profile version!

I've replaced crappy stock fan with high end Noiseblocker in my PSU. It's dead silent now and i don't have any problems with overheating though it is a bit warmer. It's rated at 50°C anyway so i don't care.

A computer PSU wouldn't seriously injure someone. It would certainly get your attention though.

This is absolutely DEAD wrong. It can kill you quickly if one of the large caps discharged if touched. 120V is something that CAN kill you so be careful on what you are doing. Do proper procedures on purging any current left in the circuit before modding.

I'm willing to be the PSU will short itself out. As long as you're not dumb enough to touch the inside of the PSU while the thing is running if there is a short, it will hurt the computer more than you. With that said, yeah 120v can kill you but you need some pretty special circumstances for it to. It will hurt like hell, I can tell you that from experience.

Honestly, before I do any work on a PSU I just let it sit for a day or two then I'll use a tool to discharge them if there is any charge left, but there usually isn't. I'm not sure how quickly it dissipates. I know old CRTs sucked and you had to wait a while for those.

Just don't run the PSU while you're modding it.

To answer you Aquinus just need to put the back switch at ON then jump the green wire of the main 24 pins connector to any black wire ground. They will be discharged automatically. No need to wait for days. That's why when you do this some psu fans will turn one or two time then stop. You discharged the remaining current by the fan itself.

Describe "nice shock"? Is that when your balls just tingle but your hair doesn't stand on end and no smoke comes out your ears?

Needless to say anything designed to deliver power can also store it in mass quantities, so best to learn first rather than tinker.

I think the most I'd want to do is replace a fan if it went out prematurely, but most PSUs have at least a 3yr warranty, and by then you've got a fair bit of cap aging.

Any repairs post warranty could turn into a money pit, unless it's a high quality PSU, but then those can last well beyond the warranty. I guess I'm saying it's more often moot than beneficial.

I have a question for you guys, i have a psu that works and doesn't work.
By that i mean if i short the green wire it works but it can't make a pc boot

i opened it to look for anything but there isn't any visible damage but i think there is a short because i learned it the hard way, i know its stupid to work on a working psu but i did and the heatsink gave me quite a shock (220v),
to cut it short is it fixable or should i just forget about it?

This thread has given me the idea to mod my psu using a blue led fan why not? So as it shines up into the new case im making. Is it hard to replace the fan i wonder?

I'm going to refit a PSU for the first time for my P4 build (my old Turbolink PSU). Apparently it was made by Seventeam but with crappy components. The platform seems to be OK so I'll just replace some stuff.

Speaking of getting zapped, i got "zapped" by a 100watt valve amp once, i was playing bass at a gig and for some reason the bloody thing went live, i hit the strings and got thrown across the room, nearly killed me, the audience was in tears of laughter, i wasnt!! true story.lol.

Yeah, it's pretty horrible getting electrocuted. Happened to me a couple of times too.

No. When it does happen same as it happened to me it means there a leak somewhere and its too dangerous trying to repair it.

No it's not hard. Just be sure that the fan is on the good side and wires are connected properly. When wires will be nude and twisted together just use electrical tape or put shrink tube before twisting them together. I hope i'm clear enough.
