I wouldn't think 120v from caps could be fatal. The amperage would have to be sustained, so if it is unplugged from the wall it would only be a nice quick shock. I've worked on a CRT monitor while it was powered on even that shock didn't kill me. Maybe I just got really lucky?

It's not the volts that kill you, it's the amps, electrolytic capcitors, especially the larger ones you see in power supplies and such, can bank up a large amount of electricity, that's why they are dangerous, far as i know.

Often repair folks will leave big electronic stuff to sit unplugged for a while before they work on it, cos of those caps.[far as i know]

or use a discharge tool aka a screwdriver jumper to ground

It doesn't take many amps to kill a human, it takes only 100 - 200 mA (0.1-0.2 A) to give you severe burns and knock you unconscious. It'd probably take less for me due to hereditary heart issues. A good read: http://www.physics.ohio-state.edu/~p...l_current.html

I meant the amps, sorry. I just thought if you unplugged the power supply but didn't discharge the caps, that it couldn't kill you. Because they can only hold power for so long. When you get shocked by them wouldn't the contained power descend rapidly? Or is the human body not conductive enough for it to work that way?
