Seagate Momentus XT Hybrid HDD, worth it?
Been looking at hard drives for my 2nd build and came across these http://www.seagate.com/internal-hard...tus-xt-hybrid/ . Im wondering if this would be a good option for my daughter's build as it would be quicker to boot (im spoiled by my SSD) while also offering a decent amount of storage for a OS drive. Any thoughts or other recommendations are welcomed.

I remember reading an anandtech review. I heard that the power consumption on these hybrid HDDs might be a bit higher (probably because they're 7200 RPM).

I own two, and they do great for their intended uses.
My first purchase of the 500GB spindle / 4GB SSD model was back when my wife's WD Blue 120GB in her Dell Mini 10v committed suicide. That box had always booted slow, so I used the time to upgrade her to Win7 Pro, drop in a Momentus XT, and 2GB of ram. Her usage patterns fit very nicely into what the Momentus does best -- do the same tasks over and over again. She boots, opens MS Outlook and an MS Access application she's written, opens Quicken, and opens IE. The whole thing is now easliy four times faster than it ever was; it is always waiting on the little Atom CPU now rather than grinding the spindle disk to death. She immediately commented on the speed boost when I was done with it, and continues to love it. The second purchase of the 750GB spindle / 8GB SSD was for my aging Dell Inspiron E1505. It doesn't support AHCI, so when I overhauled it with a T7400 CPU, 4GB of ram, an upgraded Intel 6000-series ABGN mini-PCIE wireless card, I skipped on a true SSD as I was not going to be able to enable TRIM. So in went the Momentus XT. It lives in the kitchen so it is primarily used for recipes, youtube, pandora, and a bunch of other web stuff as well as an occasional skype session. The momentus is likely overkill for that box, but it's ridiculously fast on boot and shutdown. Overall I'm very happy with the devices and would purchase them again. They give a very good speed boost on the most commonly used apps, while still retaining the space that I need for storing files, and they work well for systems that do not support AHCI. |

I changed out 3 of our laptops standard drives for the 500gb Momentus XT's & I love them and would buy them again.

I am thinking about picking one of these up at that price and getting rid of my dual WD 320gb scorpio blacks. Running Raid 0 I really wouldn't loose all that much space.
