System Specs

My first PC I used wasn't a PC but a Mac... one of the first ones I think... it was monochrome I know that much. The first one I can truely say that was MINE was an old system running Windows 3.11 with a 386 and some S3 video card.

The first video card I actually bought myself was back when I was in middle school. I got a little money for helping another family member set up dial up on her PC... friggin Compuserve... I bought it from a store called ComputerSurplusOutlet.com and it was a Pine SiS 315e "3D Phantom" 32MB AGP 2x/4x card. It was a pretty decent card... blew there all my games I had at the time, well the ones my cpu could actually support. AMD K6-II 350, 128mb ram, 3gb or so hard drive, 24x cd-rom, win98se. Ran stuff like n64 and PSone emulators amazingly well. Not sure why I quit using that card. I ended up "upgrading" to a motherboard with a SiS 530 onboard and a K6-2 500mhz, then later an Intel i740.

I later got lucky and managed to buy an Athlon XP system while I was in 10th or 11th grade... I remember it was the year the demo for Half Life 2 came out, for $30. Yes... only $30. It had a "Geforce 4 MX 440 AGP 8x 64mb". Athlon XP 2500+, 256mb DDR 266, 20GB HDD, Win XP, Abit NF7-S 2.0. This was the first system I played Half Life 2 on. I later got my hands on a Radeon 7500. This card didn't have any shaders but its raw speed gave a nice fps boost (the MX didn't do shaders either). Before the system finally died, It ended up having a 160GB WD IDE drive, Win XP Pro, the Athlon XP 2500+ overclocked to 3200+ speeds, 1GB DDR 400, SB Audigy SE, and a Radeon 9600XT 128mb from Sapphire.

I did end up with a set of Voodoo IIs I got from a friend when I bought his Platnum Gamecube for $60

The most I ever spent was $170 for an 8600GT I bought the year they came out. At the time I had a Pentium D rig running on an AsRock 4CoreDual-VSTA. It had the same ram and gpu from the athlon xp system until I got the 8600gt that is. Later I put a 9600gt in it along with 2GB ddr2 memory... skip forward and now I'm running an 8800GT. Which is both the most powerful card and probably the least expensive card i've actually spent money on... $16 for the aftermarket cooler. The 8600GT was the most i've ever spent on a gpu.

I don't have much old PC hardware. The oldest video card I have is a VisionTek Radeon 9250, I can take pictures later.

I currently have 2 legacy rigs; an AMD K6-2 @ 500mhz with a Voodoo 3 2000 and a Cyrix 5x86 @ 100mhz (which is basically a socket 3 486 tweaked and clocked higher) with an S3 card in there. The socket 3 board has PCI so its a pretty good board for 486.

My first system was a Pentium II with an ATi Rage Pro.

I have a Geforce 4 MX and some other cards but i cant remember them off the top of my head.

Originally i wanted Voodoo 2s in SLI for my K6-2 rig but it was cheaper and easier to get a Voodoo 3, i actually broke a capacitor on the 3 3000 i have so i need to see if it can be soldered and salvaged.

I used to have a socket 3 board that had 2 pci, 2 or 3 isa, and 2 of the VLB slots (looks like a combo of pci and isa). It had an AMD "p75" 133 that I overclocked to 150. It was fairly fast for what it was. So much in fact that it ran windows 98 SE just fine and even played Starcraft... which "required" a pentium.

@t_ski they're the 12mb version. I've got some old videos of them in action somewhere... i even had them running in my old AsRock 4CoreDual-VSTA build a few years back. Played Descent 3 amazingly well, even downloaded a motion blur mod for UT2k. Speaking of UT2k, it ran at 300fps on a Celeron 433 dell system. I'll see if I can find some vids.

edit: oh wow... i actually found a video of me building the system lol... to bad its an old .3gp with a really low res. Damn... april of 2009 haha

well i did find a video of the voodooIIs installed in my asrock system but sadly i couldn't find any video of gameplay with them. Probably got lost after 3 years of upgrading my system lol. Oh well... Gives me yet another reason to re-build my 3DFX system. If I can't find my pass-through cable I'll have to go with the voodooIII 16mb I have. I have a P-III 533 and an 800 laying around (slot) and I also have a Celeron 1400 s370 (but no mobo). If I can find the pass-through cable I know what spec i'll end up with. Win98SE (of course), 128mb sd ram, PCI ATI Rage 128 theatre, 2x voodoo IIs in SLI, 40 or 80GB HDD, and w/e optical drive i can find. I've got a few games I can run on it. Half Life 1, Blood II: The Chosen, Septerra Core, Shogo: MAD, Duke Nukem 3D, Unreal/ Tournament 2000, I think I have Quake around here somewhere, Tachyon The Fringe, Freespace 1 and 2, Red Alert, a bunch of DOS games including Extreme Assault, Descent II and III, and some other games I can't quite think of at the moment.

The first computer I tinkered around with was a Gateway my parents got with a Pentium II 1GHz and like 256MB of RAM with onboard video. I upgraded it with a PNY FX5200, and added a 512MB stick of RAM, thing was awesome at the time. After that I built my first real setup:

AMD Athlon XP 2500+
1GB (2x512MB) DDR1 RAM
AMD X800

That thing was a champ for running HL2 when I built it. I also overclocked the crap out of that 2500, pretty sure I destroyed that CPU or should have since I had no knowledge of temperature thresholds and just cranked it as high as I could to get it to boot stable. Oh well, it was good times.

with right cooling the chips could handle 2-2.3 Volts

I was fairly clueless about PC hardware until I ended up buying a 6600LE for the original World of Warcraft. That was the start of a slippery slope, both for gaming addiction and PC hardware obsession :P
