considering its a non K chip and wont clock much anyway a Hyper 212+ or Hyper 212 EVO will get the job done and remain fairly cheap at $30-35

Same as the H50 works well and you can toss two fans on it in push/pull for next to no noise.

If you had a fermi series card I would say go for the 760GC

Hyper 212+ with an additional 120mm fan. Heck, just get two high rpm 120mm fans with the 212+, its a great combo. Keeps my 3570k at 4.8GHz (1.36v) well below tjmax during prime/ibt/etc..

oh btw the 212+ is a little bit of a pain to put on. I ended stripping one of the nuts so its a pain in the butt to get it out. Otherwise great choice.

Good deal. Thought about getting it but it would just be better than a side grade.

Cooler Master 212 Evo... not that good

I just registered to put things under the right perspective for some people.
Although I have no doubt the Cooler master 212 Evo it's a good and cheap Cpu cooler I have to tell my experience with this cooler.
I was using an OCZ Vendetta 2 and after pushing my Phenom II x4 965 to 4.3Ghz and because I was building a Desktop for my Gf I though of buying a new Cooler that I could use myself if it showed any improvement over the Vendetta 2 or to use it on my Gf new build.
The truth? The truth is that now I believe the Vendetta 2 is one of the best Coolers ever made and it's a shame it's almost impossible to get one this days.
Just to throw some numbers (and I have to say that I tried a lot of configurations and I even at one time had 8 fans connected to my pc but it never came close to the vendetta 2): Using the 212 Evo with my cpu @ 3.6 Ghz and voltage @ 1.3v and using Prime95 as a stress test I achieved 51C with 1 Fan and 49C with 2 fans in a push/pull configuration. With the Vendetta 2 @4.1 and 1.475v Ghz I got 58C with 1 fan and 54C with 2 fans I also tried the 212 @ 4.1Ghz but I had to stop Prime95 when it reached 69C. Un both coolers I used the standard provided fan to push and a Scythe Slip Stream SY1225SL12SH 110 CFM - 1900 RPM fan to pull.
I'm not an Ocz fan boy or anything like that, the only thing I want is that you guys that are considering changing your vendetta 2 for an 212 evo realise it's not a good idea and that maybe, maybe the test methodology used this days to review Cpu coolers need to be changed to reflect more the real life situations.
As a final note I wanted to add that I just changed coolers and I kept everything else the same trying to just compare both coolers performance.
I hope someone find what I wrote here helpful...

The 212 is a cheap cooler. It does get easily saturated by high watt chips. There are plenty better than the vendetta as well. Some of which are made by coolermaster ie the v10 I have 4.5ghz on a 1090t with 40c load temps and some minor mods here and there

I never said this but I have the gelid tranquillo. I think the 212 is probably the better cooler because it can have two fans. But my tranquillo does do a good job keeping my 4.5ghz 2500k at 65c.

I'm not getting the K chips because they don't have the full virtualization tech. they do not have the one for directed IO or VT-d.

I do a lot with VMs.

I am not overclocking.

Well, the Phenom II 965 it's running @ 4.2Ghz (I'm tipping this with it) and idling @ 33C with the Vendetta 2 so probably the Vendetta just does a better job handling high wattage chips than the 212 Evo and that makes sense.
I know there are better Coolers than the Vendetta but for the price I got it for (£17.99) back in 2009 I think it is a really good value for money taking in consideration I payed £24.99 for the 212 Evo.

Good cooler is Zalman CNPS10X Extreme but I thought he is under 50$, but its about 60$ for that price probably you have something better.

Does it have to be brand new kitteh? I think you are piecing this kit together so maybe you can keep your eyes peeled for a used HSF. You might be able to find someone moving from high end air > water and just looking to clear out space so possiblee a good deal to be found/had?

IIRC the Vendettas were similar to the Xigmateks of the time, all of which were excellent coolers for the $$$

Scythe makes some pretty good coolers for less than $50, Zalman seems to have greatly reduced their prices as well, in my area/s anyways...

I can understand that but just trying to maybe save you a few $$$ and have some better cooling. It is only a HSF after all

Where would you be buying from?
