My computer is making very faint static sound

Hi guys,

I installed a new sound card 2 days ago...and since then, the computer makes a "tick-tock" sound when I turn on the power. After that, I am not sure from where, but it is making a very faint constant sharp static sound and it's giving me a headache.

Please help T_T... the sound is killing me...

what is the model of the soundcard, and have you googled around to see if this is a common problem?

Yes, I am not even sure if it's the sound card.
The model is ASUS Xonar DX 7.1 Channels PCI Express x1 Interface sound card.

have you disabled the onboard sound. Ive had an issue with this where the sound card and the integrated sound were interfering with one another. I disabled onboard sound and it went away IIRC

How do I disable onboard sound? I also tried removing the sound card itself from the computer case and it still made static sound inside the case. It is coming from the hardwares.

You need to boot into your MB BIOS screen and there should be an option, usually under onboard devices or such, to disable onboard sound, often referred to as HD Audio anymore.

BIOS booting can vary from BIOS to BIOS, one of the most common of which is to hit Delete when you see the BIOS splash screen during the reboot.

If you're not sure how to boot into your BIOS, consult your MB manual, or search for the pdf version of it on AsRock's site or Google if you don't have the paper manual.

Another issue might be radio frequency interference (RFI) and/or electromagnetic interference (EMI). Try to seat your sound card as far as possible from your graphics card and PSU.

thank you guys for all possible solutions. The sound actually turns off by itself 5 min after booting the computer and the sound actually gets louder when computer is processing heavy loads. Will reformatting the computer remove the beep sound?

Hmm, I have to wonder if you didn't hit something when you first installed the Asus sound card and loosen something causing an issue with some kind of contact. Maybe a memory chip? Power supply wire rubbing on the CPU heat sink fan? CPU plug?

It seems that this happened right after, or during, the install of the sound card. And then your saying it is still doing it after removing the card.......Leads me to believe something was hit during the installation of the card. Maybe a SATA cable, or power plug?

I checked all the wires to see whether any of them were hitting other components and they seem to be in fine form. The "tick - tock" sound is still there when booting the computer.

I have the Xonar D2X, the "Tick-tock"-sound is the amplifier turning on, if you want to get rid of that sound you have to get rid of the card

As for the other sound, it might be an unlucky coil whine (my old 7800GTX made that unbearing whine noise that changed pitch under load). Does it come from the speakers or from the computer itself?

And I STRONGLY reccommend 3rd party drivers, Asus' software support is absolute crap. The only thing I use from their site is the hotfix for a "left-right audio swapping at random" issue

I, sorta, agree with stinger608's posting.

And, since it happens without the sound card in, try getting a paper towel tube, put to your ear and move to different points in the computer to try and localize the noise.
When you get it to an area, where the noise is, disconnect the devices in that area and test.

Just a thought... Have you left a CD/DVD disc in the Lite-On drive? Like, maybe, the driver disc for the sound card.
