Everyone thinks that a hurricane is all about the "big blow", but that is just one aspect of a massive storm.
When the ground gets super-saturated and there is nowhere for the water to go, things get bad.
We had a massive rainfall a couple of years ago here in WI and it wasn't the immediate storm, it was the fact that the rivers overflowed from water moving from the worst hit areas, and houses along the rivers were washed away as the "storm drain" occurred.

Oh yeah? Try living BELOW sea level during a hurricane. lol I was on a shirmp boat once in a tropical storm. The swells were HUGE. I figured I was gonna die. Once you accept it, its not as scary. The day after is when it hit me lol.

They are def making it bigger than it is,,,IMO because of the Campaign race,,,Romney is powerless during any Emergency like this,,and the Prez get's to look like a hero. Also due to boredom. It's Kinda tuff to confirm the strength of those storm's. Many result's only include "landfall" category #. I was old enough to remember it VIVIDLY,,,and it was Being Called a 3+ @ the time , in '91. I remember it moved those Massive rock's that form the "jetti's" running perpendicular to the beachfront. those thing's weigh like 3-5 Grand lbs. That's enough for me , you can have the rest. I came out of that storm Minus one Chevy nova .

The reasoning is that the East Coast, particularly New York City, is the center of the USA. Not geographically, but for more important social reasons. It is one of the most densely populated areas in the country. Also, such storms are recent phenomenon there. Perhaps the biggest reason is that more "important" people live there and more of their stuff is affected.

Oh yeah I forgot that the East coast was the CENTER of the WORLD! Sorry about that. Suck it up keep dry keep inside and as high up as you can. If not good luck. Stay away from rooms that have trees hanging over them too. Best thing you can do is GET OUT! But hey I am warm dry and safe in the PNW we do not have storms here ever.

Still a weak hurricane it's just hitting an area that wasn't prepped for it. As I said good luck to everyone, but remember this is just a taste of it the south gets hit by category 4's...

We here up north just aren't prepared for

We had gusts up to 225mph, lasted 6 hours, lived under marshal law for a month and didn't have power for 6 months. Took 10 years to rebuild.

I wish everyone luck with Sandy. My prayers are with ya.
We here up north just aren't prepared for this kind of thing. I did witness a tornado once back in '88 here. A real rarity. It took the roofs right off some homes. Furniture out in the road, all power lines down, farm amimals killed, etc. I was living out in the country back then. Yes, NY does have country too. It's not just New York city.
It was a scary deal worrying about my familys safety.

Now 5 minutes ago I get a phone call from the 911 Emergency Center demanding we evacuate my home immediately. I live about a mile from Lake Ontario, it's right down the road. Direct shot straight line to the house. If the lake gets crazy and comes this way it won't be a good thing.

The police are going door to door making sure people leave.

Well, that's about it for me tonight, going to unplug the electrical stuff now.

I can relate to the storms, being in Florida! Enjoy the time off work, that's about the only good thing about it.

We had a tropical storm last month or so and worse than anything was the flooding. We had worse flooding from that than from any of the other storms we've had in the last several years: Frances, Jeanne, Wilma... Keep your stuff dry!

The problem here is we are getting a cold rain storm from Canada and as soon as that subsides we will be getting hit by Sandy... Last time I seen a weather prediction its gonna do a sit and spin over us....ground is already saturated and the rivers are already close to cresting.....

LOL. That is just wrong. LOL.

Man lots of wide spread damage and flooding. So much for the economic recovery! Looks like we should MOVE the center of the world to higher ground? Perhaps? I just never really get people they live in places they KNOW will get flooded or blown away and yet the ones that live in sensible safe places are the ones that will end up paying for it all. Looks like we have to come rescue all them helpless hapless people once again! So how long will we be hearing about all this? I bet for months to come for sure!

You need a TUNA CAN STOVE!

They work great, use isopropyl alcohol for fuel

In NH, 200K customers without power, mostly from wind. Rain was significant but not bad.

It is like this is the only place on the planet that a major storm has ever hit! These suit dummies on TV have hyped this crap so much! Not to mention they hype every storm as if it is the END OF THE WORLD! I just have to laugh at it all. Haunting and catastrophic!

OH THE HUMANITY!!!!

On a side not the PNW is going to see wide spread flooding through out the week! But hey we are not pussies and can handle it here! You will not hear any thing about this on CNN/FOX/ or GMA! We know we know, We are not as important as you folks. But hey stay safe people. If it gets bad here I will pack up the RV and get the hell out! I can move in 10min! Not many others can say that! LOL. Higher ground here I come. Oh yeah my parents home will be under water soon as the creak is rising more and more every hour! We have had a week of rain and it is still coming!

Someone has to stay and protect my pistols

Robocalls all night from the County Emergency Center...EVACUATE NOW!!!
They were telling 2200 in the immediate area to evacuate.
Woke up this morning to a few leaves blown about and a swing seat fell over.
Too lazy to evacuate and I won't make it easier for looters or a robber or what have you.
Someone has to stay and protect my pistols and dog also.

All is well.
