This is not the actual vote, it's just a post asking for suggestions and improvements. I hate doing these big polls only to realize I've forgotten something important.

suggestion: allow people to make upto 3 choices.... Because who here at TPU doesnt have at least 3-6 PCs/Laptops in their possession?

Good point. I've had something on the order of 10-15 different Intel CPU's, not even counting Cyrix.

How about the P4 EE ?

Maybe. Probably.

Anyway, I was thinking about asking people to vote what CPU's they actually run now. Counting everything one own or have owned is pretty useless imo.

I think the biggest concern is how granular you'd want the poll to be. Do the recent processors need to be so finely divided?

With Intel's socket-whoring, sorting by sockets for the later processors might work...

LGA 2011 (CPU A, CPU B, etc.)
LGA 1155 (CPU A, CPU B, etc.)
LGA 1156 (CPU A, CPU B, etc.)

This.

I have a T7500, an i7 2670M, and an Pii 945. These are just the ones actively in use.

Also, no VIA? Might as well include all 3 major x86 players!

Sockets aren't interesting, CPU's are. I chose the different CPU's by how important I think they are. K and extreme CPU's should be in classes of their own imo.

As I said in the OP, I know nothing about them. I could include just "Opteron" and "Xeon", but that feels a bit unfair when I was so detailed about the other CPU's...

Also in the OP, they will be included. Thinking "Single Core" and "Dual core". As with the Atoms that is a bit unfair, but it'll work imo.

So, should I just put "Xeon" and "Opteron" there as two choices, or should I go research and be more specific or should someone else with knowledge put together a nice list for me?

I believe you should be general and use Opteron and Xeon. There are just too many models/generations in the server realm and the list would become too convoluted.

Could have an "Other" option to fit in for the odd stuff. Wouldn't need a separate list for VIA/etc. Heck, might be folks like me who still use old PPC 7447s from time to time. Although I'm probably the last hold out by now.

I'd avoid sockets too. Just focus on how you are doing it now.

IMO you can remove the K and S ones , the K one are just the same as the non K one , just with an open multiplier , and the S ones just use lower clock's .

Another thing , i would change the "i7 Extreme" to Sandy bridge Extreme as there is the 3930K which is a SB-E CPU but isn't branded as extreme ..

K is for overclocking which is a big difference. I chose S because it'd be interesting to see how popular the "energy saving" models are.

Thanks for your input people, I'll make the vote now!

Its simple...

Every few years we have a 'what CPU have you got' vote.

Just to see what the folks here at TPU are running. Its a good way to find out which manufacturer is getting our hard earned monies

That means I don't get counted. I agree with not categorizing them individually because there are so many models and not that many of us using them, but as said above maybe you can create "Intel Xeon" and "AMD Opteron" categories that will count us.
