Budget Gaming/Programming/Modelling build

My friend wants to build a computer thats more capable then his core i3 laptop. Its fine for programming and modelling, but gaming its week as it only has Intel HD intergrated graphics. I told him we could build him a good system for $500 or cheaper. Sounds like he plays Minecraft and Skyrim.

I was thinking

AMD Trinity 5800k (and overclock the shit out of it)
Asrock FM2 Extreme6 Motherboard
16GB DDR3 1600mhz
1TB Western Digital Cavier blue or black
Seasonic X650
Cooler Master 690 or HAF 912

Hmmm speaking of which, this is the same style build I am building my father in law!

If he's gonna go with a Trinity I'd say take the RAM down to 8GB and choose a faster set. You can get 8GB of 2400Mhz for the same price as 16GB of 1600Mhz.

Also, consider an SSD instead of the mech drive.

Otherwise looks sweet!

Does Trinity benefit from faster memory? I was under the impression that AMDs memory controller isnt the greatest, so fast memory speeds are harder to get stable.

I wonder if the Corsair H60 cooler is enough for the 5800k to overclock it and such.

H60 is more than enough even for overclock.
1600mhz are fine i donīt see the 5800K improving a lot just because it uses 2133mhz maybe a 1866mhz memory kit

You are going to use the apu for graphics? Faster ram will result in better FPS for sure. Go for the faster set of 8gb over 16gb of slower ram.

I would go for FX6300+7850 instead, I think there is budget for that.

Agreed.

The APU is a great product in its own way, but if you are really trying to get an edge on gaming, it is not for you. The APU is more for minecraft, angry birds and whatnot.

I suggest something cheap that is heavily overclockable. (both CPU and GPU)

You should take a look at this thread. Guy wanted a build for skyrim.

Ended up looking at these two rigs I am sure they could be tweaked to fit your needs. Got a end price?

Trinity uses 1866 as a base and thats how the GP portion of the APU runs better, cuz they did a comparison of 1600 MHz ram and 1866 and the GP does utilize 1866 bandwidth, so under OC situation which is what 2000, 2133, 2400, 2666 etc. The GP should benefit from it. course dual graphics solution which is a 6670 or 7670 should work for it.

Yep, RAM speed scales with GPU performance with Llano - i'm pretty sure it'll do the same with Trinity.

I think TPU did a RAM scaling review, just can't find it...

theres 2 other pages, i mean the gains are minimal but hey additional frames does make a game playable. Course with right timings on the higher bandwidth memory should increase performance overall too.

Yeah, My friend wants to do overclocking, So id like to get him a board that is much more capable of it.

And I think I may go back to the Trinity chip, as I think hes just going to be running 2 20" monitors at 1600x900 for gaming. Should be enough with the Trinity APU for now, as he does not have much room to stretch the budget over $500

well if the APU cant drive the Monitor at that resolution it will run it at the next one that is the same Aspect Ration close to 1600x900
