Eizo Intros FlexScan S1703-T 17-inch Professional Monitor
5:4 isn't dead yet, with Eizo announcing a new 17-inch monitor for productivity applications, using the latest consumer monitor technologies. The FlexScan S1703-T from Eizo uses an LED-backlit LCD panel, which draws no more than 9W in typical usage. The monitor features 1280 x 1024 pixels resolution, 170° horizontal and 160° vertical viewing angle range, 250 cd/mē brightness, 1000:1 static and dynamic mega-contrast, and 5 ms response time. It's also one of the few monitors in its size category to feature DVI connectors, with HDCP compliance. Its feature-set includes Auto EcoView, which adjusts brightness to match ambient lighting conditions, and 2W stereo speakers with headphone jacks. Measuring 367 x 188 x 384 mm, it weighs 4.4 kg. It is slated for November 22.

Hey, 5:4 monitors are perfect for emulation of old games..MAME in particular, no lousy aspect ratio stretching or huge black borders either side of the play area, which is why I keep mine.
Also, 17inch 5:4 screens rotated into portrait mode are the perfect size for reading magazines and comics, and vertical 2d shooters in MAME, ![]() unlike 24' 16:9 which are just too big for using like that. So for niche usage, 5:4 is better than anything else available. Last edited by Hustler; Nov 8, 2012 at 09:05 AM. |

The only problem is that you can still find those monitors used and at times new with VERY low price tags. I picked up a 1280x1024 for $20 at my local thrift store. They always have 1-3 for sale at any given time (CRT's as well, but I'm talking flatscreens). If they were to offer it at nearly no cost, it might pass the bar a bit more but I highly doubt they'll do that. Other than the auto-adjust and viewing angles, nothing special about it.

If it uses just 9W when operating it is certainly a very appealing screen for offices which try to reduce energy consumption... (say 50 screens x 9W x 8hours per day instead of 20Wor 30W for other screens) and certain businesses (like banks?) use old programs that are best used on this type of screen. Eizo is usually making products for business anyway, not for home users...

SCREENSHOT SUPERFAIL
See that excel spreadsheet. 44 rows?! That is a 1600x1200 screenshot cut and paste onto a 1280x1024 screen. SHAME ON EIZO. I'd like to see more "square" TFT offerings... in fact I would love to see 2048x2048 available for "productivity" users rather than military at $10,000 a shot.

Nice try guys... but the zoom function only zooms the table and not the menu bar. Go check that out. Standard size menu bar and cell heights. This is not a "zoomed" table to 75% within excel. Also look at that W7 taskbar. Is that a 1280 in the x? Anyway, let's not split hairs. It's shopped, and mutton dressed as lamb.
