Sapphire Launches Radeon HD 7870 Toxic Graphics Card

Sapphire launched its Radeon HD 7870 Toxic 2 GB graphics card, based on the 28 nm "Tahiti LE" Pitcairn silicon. The card uses a swanky new dual-fan cooler that features a design unlike anything launched by Sapphire so far. It uses a single aluminum fin stack that spans the entire length of the card, to which heat is conveyed by four 8 mm-thick heat pipes that make direct contact with the large die. The card also features a back-plate. It appears to use a high-grade VRM with DirectFETs. The HD 7870 Toxic from Sapphire packs 2 GB of GDDR5 memory across a 256-bit wide memory interface. According to our Sapphire contact, the card is exclusive to the Chinese market.

It turns out this card is a damp squib for two reasons:

• It's still based on Pitcairn and not the superior Tahiti LE chip
• It's exclusive to the Chinese market

I agree, and i still haven't seen the benchmarks on these new chips, are they realy any better or what?

wizard did a great review of the new drivers for their most recent cards, 7870 does very well at an excellent price, also overclocks like mad while keeping low power usage, so these toxic editions will only improve on that. Been thinking about buying one but then i remember myself i got a 6950 that has no issues running any games.

Yea i saw the review and that made me change my mind from getting 2 GTX660Ti's to the 7870's and for $100 less per card.

Yea so i just want to see a stock one of these versus a stock older 7870 and see the difference?

Yea 6950 is still good thats for sure.

Yea 6950 is still good thats for sure.

Personally I'm still not a fan of SLI or Crossfire, I often see people having issues so I prefer one big powerhouse of a card if I'm going to spend the money.

Look at the TPU chart where 7950 (800mhz)/660ti is. It will be right in that split hair group. Like others have mentioned, this replaces the 800mhz 7950 pretty much exactly.

At the end of the day you can't help but laugh when 7870 is a well-designed chip, but people seem to want something just the slightest bit faster than it's stock capability to get over the that hump it sits straight on top of when overclocked (max settings and 1080p). Obviously they could not straight up bin or warranty 1200mhz, so the result is AMD making three different cards that perform the same (7950, 7870 TLE, 8850) and only about 10% faster than a stock 7870.

Something tells me Tahiti LE won't be pulling as any value leader... time to find the last of the nice 800Mhz 7950 for around $280 and OC them!

Yea thats fair enough, i was the ssame till i got my second 4870X2, i was worried that it would all go to shit but surprisingly it all went very well, so im happy to go back to crossfire again.

Righto fair enough, if thats the case whats the point in the 7950?

Once again its going to come down to price, if its close to the 7950 then im happy to stick with what ive got since the 7870 can be got here for $70 less per card.

AUS Prices:
7870 = $229 to $269
7950 = $299 to $339
660Ti = $299 to $389

Price performance the 7870 is still better i think.
