Curious about Apple, is this a decent deal?

I've never used a Apple computer before, though I have been curious about checking one out. I just saw this listed on my local craigslist, and I was wondering if you people think it's worth buying to try out the Apple OS? I can spare the money, so that isn't a issue.

I don't think thats a good deal personally. It will be VERY slow on the web due to Safari on that thing and you cannot update to a newer browser because its a PPC.

For collectors but not for someone who will use it. My old man has a G5 tower thats light years faster then that thing and its BRUTAL slow man. Thats a G4 on a 5400 RPM HD and a three version old OS. I would be surprised if it even ran youtube. Its a 100 bucks at best IMO.

Its uses an IBM PowerPC processor. Not an Intel or an AMD. Back in the day they were top of the line stuff. Now they are just a processor nothing is written on anymore. That means no Firefox, Chrome or Opera and Apple doesnt update that Safari anymore so no new flash or Java.

That laptop you could buy with OS9 that was carbon based!

OSX has many many versions. The newest being 10.11 I believe. There a HUGE differences between the two and most important most newer programs only accept 10.9 and later.

Some youtube videos. Not all and it will be SLOW playing them. They havent updated the Flash in about 5 years on that thing. IMO thats an OS9 rig. Not a decent OSX rig.

well it doesn't seem like it'll do what I'd expect from it, which is give me a good experience in trying out the Mac OS. It's just too dated for what I'd be interested in. Thanks for the heads up.

lol Ive seen them go for more then that. You might buy that thing and flip it on Ebay. Ive done that with a few Apple towers before. Hell I sold a G5 tower to Digibucc for a song.

If you can score it for 100 bucks I would. You can always flip it man.

As you can tell Rhino and I are not Apple haters so don't take it that way. We are just debating its limits.

That's cool MM, that's exactly why I posted here about it instead of just jumping in the truck and going to get it.

Real life personal experience from users, the best judgement on whether a peice of hardware is worth it's price or not.

I agree with Rhino on one thing.......people will pay top dollar for that G4. See what they are going for on Ebay. You might be able to make 100 bucks profit on it even at 175.

For the most part, they are running between $125-200, with the highest priced one being $255. http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_odkw...4&_sacat=58058

I would get it anyway and use as a laptop (with Debian or BSD on it). They are pretty sexy imo. If I had the money.

I already have this for a laptop- http://us.toshiba.com/computers/lapt...0/C655D-S5332/

Only reason I was considering it was to try out the Mac OS

That is assuming nothing goes wrong with it. If it does, you will have to unglue it and pray it is something you can fix.

I am an apple hater, and I can tell you it is a terrible financial decision to buy this for anything more than $25.

A PC with these equivalent specs would go for free or in the garbage, and is capable of running Linux also.

There are no equivelant PC as it's a PPC. Also, shut up.

Your ignorance is not my problem. Act like a child and I'll treat you like one.

Equivalent does not mean equal, and there is nothing special about PPC in 2012.

I have a great amount of respect for Rhino in this community. After thinking that post, it slipped a little.

I have the Mac 27inch, 3 macbook airs, 1 of which is ips , 1 when they came out with SSD's and one of the original models, plus 12 more macbook pro 4's, all of which i use daily and the 12 i set up at work. That thing is not worth $100. It will be catastrophically slow, and there is next to no support for those things, it simply isnt supported anymore. All it's worth is melting down and selling, but ofc it's an apple product, so some donut somewhere is gonna buy its terrible processor and 5400rpm drive for a few hundred bucks. Even our Macbook Pro 4's are getting a little slow, and they are YEARS ahead of that thing. Not worth it, even for douching around on. You can buy the baselines mac hardware for supporting OSX (specific intel processor and mobo) for less than $300 and install OSX on it, I've done it before for a private client.

Correct.
AMD's equivalent to the 3770k is an fx 8350, there is your example. That does not mean they are equal.
