I have a HTC Hero S and it's been the best phone I've ever owned. Naturally though, phones usually get better every time you upgrade to a new one. But this one is pretty good!

As far as Google pricing, you will see tax and shipping, but I do not see that sending the price anywhere near $500- more like $380-$425 or so depending on local taxes. The increased prices you see now are likely due to the somewhat limited supply of the phones via Google right now- its out of stock currently. Those who want one now may want to pay the premium from Newegg, Amazon, etc.

Best of luck on your search, let us know how it turns out.

LG Optimus S owner here and the touchscreen on my phone makes me wanna throw it across the room most of the time... it's baaaaad

It looks smooth on a cheaper handset, seems easy to use. had a look for like 2 seconds. Just go into a store and look at them

Not sure if you're interested in a bit of the same, but the Galaxy Note 2 is pretty nice. Fastest phone i've had in a while. I wouldn't say i'm dissappointed with the screen resolution and camera, but they could have been better. Either way it's a sick looking screen and runs incredibly smooth. Not to mention serious battery life.

I'd go for the Google Nexus over the 4 just because Samsung made the 3 and I like AMOLED

Got myself a Nexus4 last month.. and its really fast (fastest Android phone on the market as of now). 60 fps on most games that I saw going around 30 fps on my previous phone (Xperia Play OC'd @ 1.8Ghz). Will CM Mod this once everything is stable.

I have several cons for it though..

- Soft keys will consume some of that screen space (it auto hides during movies, but for games it doesn't)
- Non expandable memory. 16GB is just too little for my taste.
- A bit choosy on wifi routers. I have a buffalo with latest dd wrt firmware, but is uber slow on it. Other routers are fine with it though.
- Has "grip of death". Wherein signal diminishes on certain phone grips.
- Pita to change battery (if you ever need to) since everything is bolted down.
- That chrome you see on the side dents easily. Accidentally dropped mine about a foot, and the corner got a dent on it. They should've just removed that chrome ring in the first place.. makes it look cheap imo.

My previous phone was an xperia play. Sony didn't upgrade the thing to ics nor jb. Same goes for their other older models. Drawbacks of vendor specific custom roms. Not to mention loads of bloatware that drag the phone's performance down.

Meanwhile, the 2010 released Nexus S was one of the first phones to get JB upgrade.
