No sleep on SSD but sleep HDD ?
Hi guyz, the question is not exactly for me but for few friends. My main computer only have SSDs and my HTPC run 24/7 for few things like torrent so it never sleep HDD btw.
The main thing is about TRIM and/or garbage collection. Its usually better not to sleep your SSD to let the trim/GC do its job but if you ask windows to sleep or not the hard disk, windows seems to do it for every drive in the system so you end up never sleeping your HDD if you dont want to sleep your SSD. If they do nothing, HDD are better to sleep IMO. Pics of the thing. ![]() If you guyz have an idea or a tweaking that allow HDD sleeping but leave the SSD awake to let the TRIM/GC do its job, ill appreciate it ! ( mostly my friends )

if you never leave your PC idling and just go to sleep after short period of innactivity, your TRIM/GC wont never really make its job. Th system/ssd need to idle for it to work the best.

I'm pretty sure the Trim function is fast and it will do it in the spare moments you are running everything from ram. If your SSD is never idle when you are using your computer, you are doing something wrong.

The TRIM command mostly do its work when you delete files, but when you take a look at most commun way to keep your SSD as fast as new, they seems to all recomand not to sleep and turn off the disk sleep to let GC/TRIM do its work.
I just want to make sure we do all we can to keep our "great hardware" as fast as possible

idle
the statement about idle is true.. even if you set scheduled defrag & optimization (TRIM) to "run daily" but don't let the PC to go idle, then for example after one week later you run defrag & optimize manually and it will be saying "days from last optimization: 7"... (in Win8)
