I don't think this is just PR. There has to be some monetary incentive or the Apple bean counters would have a fit.
The PR, of course, doesn't hurt ... at least in the US market.

China has been slowing down for a while now. Everyone has. Honestly I think China was a flash in the pan. Germany and India are the ones you should watch.

I'm getting a rageboner. Not because they move stuff to the US, that is awesome if it works out, but comments.

As a linux power user, I am very surprised that Rhino is supportive of Apple. Most Linux pros that I know really have it out for Apple.

The Apple OS is based on Unix. Still surprised?

Which is a strange stance to have, and its partially why i get so angry (i mean the hatred). When talking apple people drop every bit of sense they have. It has gotten better lately but still.

Before we begin, leave your Apple hate at the door.

There are two reasons a company would move back to the US. They have direct monetary incentives (tax breaks, import costs, etc...), or they have indirect monetary incentives (Job creation, higher quality laborers, etc...). Any other reason is a direct link back to money.

Now, let's use that universal truth. The price of labor in China is rising. The price of labor in the United States has stagnated. Skilled labor in the US is maintaining costs, while skilled labor in China is difficult to find. The cost to import goods is rising, as fuel prices increase.

The question, that Apple seems to have answered for us, is "Does the move back to the US make sense?" A good accountant will measure current trends, and extrapolate how long it will take for large changes to make fiscal sense. No matter if you hate them or not, Apple runs a good business. They've obviously already done the math, and discovered $500 tablets sell better in countries that are willing to throw huge amounts of money at frivolous things. They made a business decision to open a plant in the US.

There is no reason to hate, or think that they are doing something just for PR. A company that can sell two year old hardware, with a decent OS, and make huge amounts of money is a success. Successes don't do stupid things, that require this level of planning, and remain a success. Apple shows no signs of deciding to become less successful...

This heavily insulted my intelligence...

That is exactly why I said what I said. I am not an OSX user, so I can only guess they dislike OSX because of the restricted nature of the operating system in comparison to Linux.

Sorry 3870, didn't mean to offend you. No way to know how much people know about OSs and software.

I didn't mean to assume that I have any amount of worthy intelligence. Were talking about a guy who got stumped on my web server for two hours because I forgot to chmod +x update.cgi

I think if anything good came out of learning Apple is moving back to the US, its the term "Rageboner" was established on TPU.

True I admit I'm one of those who drop every bit of sense towards apple. Its coz i do give two shits what they do, they could crawl in a hole somewhere and die for all i care. I don't like apple the company and its products period, i have nothing against the people.

Effective PR always pays for itself. Just imagine all the Apple fanatics saying, "my Mac was made in the USA; now you have nothing to complain about!" This is a boon to Apple lovers all over the USA which is the largest market for Apple products. This may be their best marketing tactic ever.

i'm telling you the issue always comes down to nerds being upset that computers are now hip. i've said it before on these forums. computers used to be "our" thing and we could lord it over all the jocks who had it out for us because we run the systems and they are janitors. now getting into computers is pretty cool thanks to apple making it sexy. nerds are pissed!

The fact that other companies (Lenovo, China - TSMC, Taiwan) are doing this as well tells me that it's more that just PR.
