NVIDIA isn't the only graphics company short of Vista drivers

While NVIDIA nearly got sued over their lack of Vista-ready drivers for their G80, ATI isn't exactly innocent. The Inquirer did a quick experiment to see if it was possible to configure a Vista workstation with an ATI FireGL graphics card. To their surprise, it wasn't. This is because ATI does not have any FireGL drivers compatible with Windows Vista. And unlike NVIDIA, they do not even have beta drivers out. While most of the gaming community is more likely to use an NVIDIA G80 than an ATI FireGL, this is still a major problem for anyone relying on a FireGL based workstation.

i dont think a smart person using a workstation would have upgraded to vista yet, by the way when is 64bit meant to actually be taking off legitimately?

Seems this isnt a problem for ATI afterall. As soon as their R600 comes out, the FireGL will be fixed.

The R600 isn't do out for another 2 to 3 months though. Well I suppose the workstation models would be, in April right?

And yes, a lot of Workstation applications are compatiable with Vista.

Who cares for workstation graphics. I just want normal stable drivers for Vista.

And both companies ATI and nVidia suck a the moment. nVidia has no drivers for Vista. Ati doesn't have a DX10 card. I miss another graphic company that whould scare nVidia and Ati into fixing there current misstakes.

In my notebook I have a nVidia card and in my desktop a ATI card.

nVidia has beta and stable non beta drivers for Vista, as does ATi for general purpose.

I don't think the FireGL drivers are a big issue, atm. Most companies that use highly powerful workstations for rendering, aren't likely to upgrade to the new OS for quite some time. They cherish stability over new features.

At least ATI can manage to consistantly get Windows XP drivers out, some of us NVidia users haven't seen a new driver since November, and those weren't exactly perfect.

Dreadful. ATI really should have FireGL drivers out for Vista already. DX10 is one thing, but skipping on existing high-value customers that pay THREE to FOUR times the price for the SAME core hardware just in the FireGL configuration...

Unforgiveable.

But think about it for a moment, how many of these corps that use fireGL, are gonna be using Vista for their high end rendering station already? I doubt very many made the switch, as stability is of paramount concern. They've had years to get XP/2003 to where they want it, I doubt they're gonna throw that all away for some nifty new Vista features.
