Gran Turismo 5 drifting

Hey guys! Not sure if this is the right forum but I'll give it a shot.

Recently, I have once again started playing Gran Turismo 5 with a Steering wheel and stick shift to prepare me in driving. So far I'm doing great, I finally learned how to properly shift gears, driving techniques, proper in-and-out of turns and braking.

Now I'm kinda interested in learning how to drift in GT5 just for fun.

Playing on arcade mode first, kinda want to get the general feel first. Usually I try out with the HKS CT230R (4WD) or the RX-7 with racing hard at the rear and racing medium at the front. Everything else is off and ABS is off too.

I end up in the grass or spin out usually.. any tips or tricks?

thanks guys!

Do you happen to have a map of the track you're doing it on? It seems like you're just going waaay to fast. Also, how are you applying throttle while going through a turn?

Well by recently I meant for the pass 6 months but yeah it feels as though I'm going too fast.

I try drifting on Tokyo R246 http://gran-turismo.wikia.com/wiki/Tokyo_R246 and some other tracks (like the Suzuka )

I play around with the throttle and clutch, the seems that I always end up in a stop, spin, or in the wall :/ . I don't want to learn the handbrake technique since the G27 doesn't have a Handbrake.

Well the handbrake method is the easiest but if you car is powerful enough you should be able to do it by just giving it lots of power through a turn. I'm sure there are some guides on youtube to help you

Mash it to get it to slide and then let off a little. If you're having serious problems just mash the gas until it slides, then get completely off of it, and work from there. I'd also recommend an AWD car like a Skyline or a GT3000, or maybe even a suped up Impreza.

This, a thousand times. The skyline is amazing if set up properly.

Check this for Drifting on HKS. Only handbrake isn't enough in GT5.
BTW confort hard are the best tires.
I recently sold my ps3 but I played a lot GT5 and other GT series.

Tune: but is for controller only but you can adapt it.

It may not be, but at least I'm learning how to properly shift gears and the likes. at least I can get a feel on what the real thing may be. Better to do some safe research beforehand right?

Turn into a corner with no power. Halfway through the corner gas it and dump the clutch. When the slide is initiated input opposite lock.

No. Driving a car in game is little to nothing like driving a car IRL. Especially the feel of the clutch, engaging of the gears, and shifting through them. Do NOT expect whatever car you drive to be at all like your in game experience.

I'm not hoping big and I know the two things are worlds aways from each other. I'm learning how to drive a real car this coming summer, so hopefully I already have a little knowledge on what I might face :/

i haven't played gt5 but i remember there was a very detailed car setup in the first two - for more oversteer set rear springs and sway bars softer (and or vice versa up front, you need to tinker to see what you like best), you can probably add more compression damping to the rear shocks to induce even more oversteer. also if the car lacks power when powersliding you could shorten the gear ratios, add more power in lower rev range (where the auto transmission downshifts) to help it. did this stuff in underground 2 (however arcade that game was it was actually possible to tune the cars to perform much better than by default, some like the rx8 understeered like mad at default settings). also, do use a rwd car, awd won't really powerslide unless you can mess with the differentials.

http://www.rapid-racer.com/suspension-tuning.php <more tips and details are all over the interwebz, you can additionally mess with camber, toe and lots of little detail

man i wish i could get a job setting up cars.

+1,,Definitely NOT,,Although , As a Driver in Games, and Real Life, I CAN tell you it Will entirely Depend on Your Traction situation. Weather/Number of Drive Wheel's/Velocity etc..

Try this.. If your in a Closed track , e.g. NO other driver's Barreling Down on you, take the time to Pull up to a turn and See what it take's to Get it Sideways, this can also be done on a decent Straight away ,as well. In my experience, on Oval Track in Mini Stock, (with the Opposite Goal) to avoid Loss of traction, You Want to avoid Sudden Extreme Acceleration, or Shift's in Your G's. (G-Force). So you Simply need to Do the opposite, Position yourself @ 3/4 to the Outside of the track , coming into the Turn, Then just Before hitting it(the turn) , Steer Left/Right , and Apply Throttle. Then You Need to "Real time" Account for the Direction You Begin to head in, By Quickly Turning left/right (in SMALL amounts). Mostly, it's a "feeling" you'll begin to Get, as you Learn how the Vehicle reacts to this situation. Once that link between you and the Vehicle is made, It'll be like second Nature. So Basically, #1, Break Traction , #2 Don't Freak out, #3 Hold your Line, #4 Maintain RPM's, Last thing you want , is to Come out of a sucessful Drift, and Realize that you were SO concentrated on holding the line, that you are now either in Too low a gear , or are moving too Slow to Continue the drift. Once these Skill's are mastered , You Should be able to Hold a drift for an Entire Track. Also Find Which Class suites you best e.g. FF , FR, MR etc.. 4 wheel is Okay, But FR, is Easier IMO. Keep Trying, and You'll get it. Also ,,NOTHING you learn in a game, will translate into real life, please don't Carry Your "skill's" from GT5 to the real Street's. Have Fun.

Have fun!

But the moment you enter the real car forget everything you learned in GT5 and start from scratch.

also on a sidenote, are there any PC racing sims I can also play? Thinking of buying my own g27 rather than head to my cousin's house just to play GT5..

So far the NFS Shift series seem good.

This thread makes me LOL at the idea of a driver learning on a game.

I have burned out an ABS module learning something as simple as borderline braking and then showing a couple friends how to do it.

Two sets of ceramic carbon metal pads and Brembo crossdrilled rotors.

Two sets of Traction TA tires.

On roads with no one on them, and once I learned on dry pavement it was easy to relearn on snow and ice. No game is going to prepare you for real life driving, the only thing it will do is make you believe your car is something it isn't and you will then do something stupid and either die, or kill someone else.

oh ffs all you guys arguing "he's gonna learn wrong and crash a car or sth" do realize that the odds are the op is a sane rational person? as in he won't drive a car irl (at least not without proper training) like he will in gt5?

your argument equals "fps games are the cause of increasing number of shootouts"

Learning to drive from a game won't make you a hazard but it will not really learn you anything and could impede your progress. There is much, much more to a clutch than just swapping gears. You need to both be aware and literally feel the torque of the engine through the pedal to apply not too little and not too much gas. Getting the car going from a full stop going uphill is one of the most difficult aspects of driving, and if you have the wrong impression of what using a clutch actually means it could take you much, much longer to actually learn to use it.

In short, playing BF3 won't teach you how to shoot and playing GT5 won't teach you how to drive.

Watch one of the countless youtube vids, I barely needed any driving lessons at all thanks to them.

Good luck

There was a huge increase in teen accidents after The Fast & the Furious was released to theaters.

But no, I'm sure that a movie about people doing stupid things and driving fast had nothing to do with it. As to your FPS argument, I'm sure there are at least a number of cases where someone with a mental illness playing a violent game further confused and obscured the line between reality and fantasy. However the normal sane person is a little more caution when it comes to guns and direct death than trying something stupid when they have a false sense of security in a car. Just look at the idiots dying every day to prove my point.

Off topic.

Back to the OP.

Do you have a feedback steering wheel?
