Advise on new card..Anyone?

I sold my AMD 5970 that I purchased last year on Newegg BF sale for $250.00. I paid $299.00 so I feel pretty good. Now I am in need of a new card and I am having difficulty chosing a new one. I am stationed in Germany and they have an electronic shop called "Conrads" that sells a pretty nice selection of graphics cards. Here are my choices below. Keep in mind these are U.S. dollar prices after using the VAT(19%) form:

ASUS DCII 7970= $368.87
Sapphire 7970 OC ed= $395.29
XFX 7970 Double D = $359.34
ASUS DCII 670 = $377.32
Zotac AMP! 670 = $359.34
Zotac AMP! 680 = $421.39

Yes, those are great prices. I would shoot for Newegg but they charge over $20.00 for shipping APO. Conrads is down the street. My setup is an i5-760 CPU on a ASUS 27" 1920X1200 monitor with 16GB of memory. Nothing fancy. Please advise on the situation and thank you.

For 359 You can have a 7970. At 359 the 670 aint worth it.

Those are great prices... here's a recent review of the 7970 for performance reference.

I usually go AMD, but personally would lean towards the 680 for anecdotal reasons.

Of those I'd probably go for the XFX Double D at that price and OC it to at least 1100 if you can. I'd also OC that 760 if you haven't, but get a better cooler for it if you're just running the stock one. Those can hit 4GHz.

Light Boost makes Nvidia tempting right now, but that takes a fairly big commitment with a 3D capable 120Hz display to enable. The plus is you get motion blur free viewing as good or better than CRTs can do.

Light Boost is merely a timed strobing of the LCD backlight to sync it with the display's refresh though, so a generic and/or AMD version of it is certainly not out of the question.

Don't forget that AMD had Eyefinity well before Nvidia had anything to compete with it. They definitely put thought into display options, so I wouldn't be surprised if they're working on their own version of Light Boost.

1 or 3. 7970s are simply better cards for the money than a 680 nevermind the 670's.

The feature I mentioned has a lot to do with what chip vendor (Nvidia/AMD) you go with (currently anyway). It's pretty common that people are getting fed up with the tradeoffs of LCD tech, and the motion blur whether it's very noticeable visually or not can take quite a toll on the eyes.

Did you know that many US retailers will ship to an APO/FPO address for about the same price it costs to ship stateside? They are tax free, too.

I built a computer while I was in Iraq because of this.

Just grab the Asus 7970, its a decent card and its the cheapest.

Actually the XFX is the cheapest on that list, and between the 3, Sapphire and XFX are getting better reviews than the ASUS.

Sapphire and the XFX are both ref cards. Sapphire is the best one cause it has one more phase in VRM than the XFX, together with a more robust cooler.

Games that do have it can turn it off.

Honestly though over time LCD tech gets better depending on what make and model LCD you go with.
