Private Message Notifications
One of the things that I really prefer about [H]ard|Forum compared to TPU is the way that PM notifications are handled. Here at TPU, we get an email telling us that we've received a PM, along with the title & user who sent it:
![]() At [H], however, we get the text of the PM right in the email as well: ![]() Personally, I find this much more convenient. There are many times when I'm out on-the-go and I get an email notification on my phone that I have a PM. Frequently, I don't have time to go to the forum and actually read it. It would be much better (IMO) to have the text pasted right there so I knew what it was about and if it was relevant to log on and reply right away. Is there any way this could be implemented here?

on my mobile through my yahoo email account I get another hyperlink that says something like "show quoted text" to view it in the emails.

That would be sweet getting the full text message in an email.

I agree that it's great getting the full text in the email, but as ever, there's always two sides to things.
If the sender is anything like me, they'll end up editing that PM a couple of times or perhaps more after sending* (if the forum software allows it like some do) so the recipient could well end up acting on an out of date message. Where you can't edit the message, like on TPU, this won't be a problem, of course. I think you get the whole message over at GN, don't you? Can't remember now. *I'm flipping notorious for this! I always remember something or fix a typo or whatever.

Not a bad feature suggestion as it saves you time getting to the gist of the message. EVGA, Anandtech, and OCN has the feature on their site.

If implemented I would like to see it as an option, so we can pick if we want it to show the message or not.

We specifically disabled the text, because people reply to the email and wonder why nobody gets their response.

Email is also less secure than logging into TPU. At work we will do the same thing but it is because we don't trust sending sensitive information through an email. Not that information in a PM here at TPU is that sensitive, but it's a consideration.

Well, it does say multiple times in the email from [H] not to reply to it. Surely that isn't reason enough to disable it for the rest of us?

Not everyone wants their email address exposed just because they send a PM. Tell me, what is my email, because I bet you nothing on the TPU forums will provide it.

Hello Aquinus. I think you just stepped on your own foot there. Or perhaps I wasn't clear: make the "reply to" address the same as the recipient not the sender . Privacy is maintained. If they reply, they only reply to themselves, and therefore are reminded NOT to reply to the PM email.

Ah, one potential issue. If the email bounces because the receipient of the PM has an invalid email, his email address will be revealed.
Since the address is invalid anyway, this is a minor problem imo. Any thoughts? |

What if it bounces due to a temporary fault? In that case a valid email address is revealed, busting privacy.

yep, possible in theory. normally our email server will try a couple of times if it gets a "temporary error" message. if the destination email server is set to return "permanent error" for temporary errors then it will bounce immediately

@W1zz, Since the e-mail is generated by the TPU admin e-mail account won't it just bounce back to you?

If it bounces back to the "reply-to" won't the bounce fail and also bounce ... repeatedly?
That's could make for a lot of bouncing around !!

I tested with bta and he doesn't get a bounce.
Send me a pm, I set my email address to invalid. Not sure if it bounces to reply-to: or to from: or to return-path: mail servers automagically kill bounced bounces, otherwise the internet would dead already |
