My New Build.. its been ages!!!

Hi guys, been a while since I visited TPU, nice to see everyone's alive and kicking!

Long Story Short:
So my previous rig (which was my 1st) has been dead in the water for more than a year and a half now (spent too much energy on it previously trying to fix it to no avail) and left everything to concentrate on the "real world"..

Now that I am older, wiser.. and have slightly more disposable cash I've decided to go back to my gaming roots and order myself a lovely new rig.

So I wanted to ask the experts.. what do you think?


CPU: i5-3570K
MOBO: Gigabyte GA-Z77X-UD3H
RAM: 16GB (2x8GB) Corsair DDR3 Vengeance Low Profile Jet Black PC3-12800 (1600)
GPU: Palit 2GB GeForce GTX 680 JetStream NVIDIA Graphics Card
HD: 1TB Western Digital WD1000DHTZ VelociRaptor, 3.5"
CASE: Cooler Master HAF XM


Recycling:

New PSU - 850W CORSAIR CMPSU-850HXUK
Optical Drive
+
all peripherals

I am not sure what cooling paste/fan to get for the CPU. (not a fan of stock fans)
Would probably leave it at stock speeds but would like option to mildly OC in future.

I would try and get a 4GB GTX 680. You can take down the PSU a notch to a good quality 750w, unless you plan on going dual graphics cards in the future with those 680's. And I would highly recommend an SSD instead of that Velociraptor, it's just not worth it.

A mild OC on that CPU shouldn't be a problem, just watch out when it hits in the mid 70c temperature vicinity. Then I think it would be wise to get an aftermarket cooler.

the parts looks good. Add a SSD if you can afford it. For a mild OC, the Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO is plenty

What would the benefit be for me if I was to get a 4GB GTX version..? would it make much difference for 1080p gaming would it make much difference?

What SSD would be a good drive to look at? I'm more about reliability and endurance and have never had an SSD before but at a quick glace would a Samsung model fit the bill?

Edit: Hows a Samsung 256GB 830 Series SSD look?

Honestly, for now I think that 2GB is probably sufficient. But if you're like most responsible people, you'll probably want to keep this computer for several years, so it would be valuable to get something more likely to last for newer games or a higher resolution monitor.

The Samsungs are great. Intel & Crucial also make very solid models.

For the price of WD VR you could get proper 120/128gb SSD and 1-2 TB storage drive.
Also i would consider geting GTX 670 as it's way cheaper and not that much weaker performance wise.

On the other hand, as u said u were 1.5y w/o rig why rush now when Haswell will be up and runing soonish so maybe worth waiting.

Yep, a GTX670 would be almost as fsat as the GTX680, and a fair bit cheaper. With money saved, you can opt for a 120GB SSD for OS, and if your heart's set on the VR, I ain't going to talk you out of it, but use it for storage, it cannot match an SSD in terms of sheer speed and responsiveness. Otherwise, scrap that VR and get a 1TB/2TB WDC Black for storage. You're reusing that HX850W PSU, right? It's powerful emnough that, in the future, should you decide on a 2nd GTX670 for some SLi gaming, that PSU would handle the added load with ease. Might I ask, why nV cards only? Best bang right now, on the higher end scale, is the HD7950 which OC like a mad mutha.....

I think this 670 is very nice..will surely save some bucks for you....otherwise I will also ask you to consider a 4gb version of 680 or better to go sli with 670...

I went and ordered the SSD as everyone advised, thanks for pushing me in the right direction

The ASUS TOP 670 (looks great!) costs the same here at the moment as the Palit but is out of stock everywhere by the looks of it.

I reckon I'm all sorted now and fingers crossed this one doesn't get outdated too quickly within the next couple of years ..

I honestly don't have any more patience to wait for the Haswell chipset - the itch is burning

Cannot wait for it all to arrive next week and get cracking. I'll zap a couple of pics the second ive done enough to not be embarrassed of my cable management skills or lack of...

I wouldn't get a 4GB GTX680 unless your running a 1440p monitor or higher. If not then you get basically no benefits. And you will actually have more negatives out of it then you might think because of the memory latencies.
