Fan trouble? After only 4 months?

For these past 2 days now, whenever I power up my pc the front intake fan starts making a loud grinding noise. It goes on for 2 minutes, then it goes silent.

At first I thought something was in the way and the fan was hitting it, but no.
There is no dirt either.

I watched it closely, and it appears that it spins slightly slower during boot, and when the noise stops it's spinning faster. But it might have always been like that and not the cause of the problem - I never really checked out whether the case fans spin slower during boot (like my cpu fan does).

Is it possible that this fan is giving up? The case is a NZXT Switch 810 and I purchased it brand new August 2012!

Fan(s) are dying. Bearings have prematurely worn out. Just happened to me with a Corsair SP fan.

Contact the NZXT rep on here and I'm sure he'll get a replacement to you quickly.

Sounds like the bearing ran out of lubricant or a cheap sleeve bearing went bad. My 3 week old HD 7950 had a fan do that out of the blue one night and it scared the crap out of me. Fans are so cheaply made these days that the issue isn't uncommon.

It has always been an issue afaik. There are more "aftermarket" fans around nowadays though so the numbers are probably up anyway.

But yeah just RMA it.

The fans are a rifle bearing so likely they just ran out of lube. Ask for an RMA on the fan or order new ones as there are much better fans out there.

Weird... a couple of days after I started this thread the fan stopped doing that noise any more. It's working fine now. And I did nothing to correct the problem.
