photo editing build??

saw a friend of mine on facebook about building a pc, gonna cost him 1772.5$ US converted.

looks ok but he plans to use it only for photo editing. he can afford it but I told him he can go cheaper.

Intel i7 3820
asus rampage iv gene x79
1tb wdc black
g.skill rpjaws 8gb 2x4 1600
g.skll sniper 8gb 1600 2x4
asus 7950
thermaltake smart 730w 80+
samsung se-208ABcm storm trooper
cm hyper 212 evo

gave him multiple build from i7 3820, i7 3770k and i5 3570k which are near his price point, he's offline now so he still hasn't replied to my message.

check out this link (hope it works, I posted some builds there, and yeah they are actually quite extreme for his plan (he did say he only plans to edit photos so no gaming besides probably facebook games or plants vs zombies) so I'm sure the builds I posted there were extreme and overkill, I bet you guys can do better ^_^.

everione knoz tat macs r th3 best 4 edting!!*~* But seriously his rig is fine, if he wants an overkill pc, and has the money to do it let him. He probably only plays those games because he used to have a bad computer and knowing that he can play anything might get him to play some more demanding games.

I can edit photos regularly on this piece of crap machine I use, like a 1.86ghz dual core, fairly average cheap ssd, 4gb ram at 1333 and a gts450.
Editing photos just uses a lot of memory mostly, and a little cpu ooompf for rendering those images. cant remember what that piece of crap was called, something along the lines of macbook air or something.
I dont know, it was useless, but it edited photos just fine.
Bottom line is you dont need to spend $2000 on a shiny machine to edit images, something half the price will be more than just effective.
He has the money, so evidently he secretly just wants an awesome rig for bragging rights, kinda like buying a mac to browse the internet with.
maybe get him into pc gaming.
My girlfriend is a professional photographer, and until she bought herself an iMac recently, she's been running CS5.5 on a 5 year old Toshiba laptop with no complaints.

well he did say this

"but looking for alternatives sa parts.. considering to buy much more important than this one.. pang edit ng picture lang purpose nito hahaha"

lhe plans to buy much more important parts (he likes photography and such) probably gonna buy a new lens or something.

so was thinking of helping him out sorting his rig (he doesn't play pc games btw he's more of a fb games and work type of guy). well it might help him out probably buy a better monitor for his rig since the one he had is actually crap well not really crap but low res 1366x something. was thinking along side of the i3 ivy. what do you guys think? how about the amd cards how well do they play with photo editing? how about a nvidia 560ti or something equivalent?

edit: how do I put those thing here in the post where if people click it, it will expand and show more message??? like quate

Yeah, for image editing the price point is rather high. Not to say that it's bad hardware, I love my i7 3820, but it's not necessary for image manipulation. If he wants to save money, he should go with a 3570k instead. Also a GPU that strong isn't necessary for this purpose, unless he is planning on doing gaming as much as he will be editing.

All in all, it looks like a good machine but it's overkill for what it will be used for.

If he does stick with SB-E, he could downgrade that video card a lot if all he will be playing is Plants vs Zombies to save some money. There is no reason to spend a ton of a GPU if you're not going to use it. Also if you really want GPU acceleration for photoshop, you're better with a FireGL card over a Radeon HD for quality. Otherwise, put something slower (like a 7750 or 7770,) and it will be more balanced for what he will be using it for.

All in all, I think that a locked i5 IVB and a 7750 would be more than enough for his purposes. As he won't be overclocking, or gaming (much), and will be primarily using this for photo manip. and facebook (browsers). He could cut that cost in half easy and still get the same performance for what he will be doing. SB-E has everything that he doesn't need, that's the best way to put it.

New lenses arent cheap in the slightest, my last 350mm lens for work cost more than my whole pc. Saving him money on his pc means he can buy a better lens i suppose

Honestly he doesnt need a fast gpu, just one with decent memory, and AMD cards are cheaper and tend to come with more VRAM. As long as he has plenty of RAM like 8gb minimum and a fairly average card (7850 sort of thing), then hes plain sailing. As aquinus said, cpu is overkill, may as well stick with SB-E because an i5 3570k is a gaming chip
Plain old quad core and a reliable cheap MoBo will be fine, along with 1TB for his images and a standard SSD for OS and software.
He wont even need an aftermarket CPU cooler.

actually recommended him this if he wants ipeen lol cheaper but also powerful and yeah overkill
Intel i5 3570K vy Bridge LGA1155

Processor: Intel i5 3570K Ivy Bridge LGA1155 = 9,995
Motherboard: ASRock Z77 Extreme 4 = 6,750
Memory: G.SKLLS Sniper 8GB (2X4GB) 1600Mhz CL9 = 2,150
Graphics Card: Sapphire HD 7950 OC Ed = 15,300
Hard Disk Drive: Western Digtal Caviar Black 1TB 64Mb Cache = 4,100
Solid Slate Drive: Crucal M4 128GB = 4,500
Optical Disk Drive: ASUS 24X DVD Writer SATA DRW-24B5ST = 950
Power Supply: FSP AU-750M AURUM CM 750W 80PLUS Gold = 4,850
Chassis: Cooler Master Storm Trooper = 6,690
CPU Cooling: Corsair H100i = 4,800

Total: 60,040 or 57,130 using cm hyper 212 evo turbo dual fan cooler (1,890 ito)

told him he can go for a i5 locked 7750/7770 and remove the corsair h100 to keep it at a lower cost or also remove the ssd, and change to a cheaper mobo. but still haven't received his relply, probably too tired with his work. as I remember he was working with a 2gb ram c2d intel chipset graphics if i recall right, and well since he's making an upgrade, I believe even a locked i5 should be a good upgrade

Corrected you there. The only reason to get a 3570k is to over-clock, gaming has nothing to do with it. If you're not going to overclock the 3570 will game just as well as the 3570k. With all of that said, an i5 3470 would be a pretty good option for a CPU for this rig if he wants Intel.

More importantly is the monitor and the colour reproduction.
Depending on how serious he is.

Anything that is an i3 or better will be faster than a C2D.

Ditch the k-edition chip. He won't be over-clocking so its a waste.

There are a lot of other chipsets you can consider since he won't be overclocking. The H77 chipset might be more inline for what his rig will be doing.

Overkill, he is not gaming. a 7750 is a cheaper and better option since he will barely be using it.

With the locked i5 and a 7750, this could be much smaller. Could save some money here.

was thinking like a i5 3470, h77, corsair cx430 or cx500, 7750 sapphire, 8gb ram well maybe even the i3 3220 would be good.

Let him compress a RAW to a layered .tif on an i3 one time. I bet he punches you in the mouth for giving it to him.

My advice....

Nice big SSD for a scratch disk.
8 gigs of FAST ram (Min).
Good NEC calabrated monitor.
i7 CPU. He will need it once he learns how to use photoshop properly.
Good size mechanical HD for storage and a second for backup.
Wacom tablet.
NVIDIA GPU as they handle Open GL far better than AMD. 1gb is all you will need unless you get a higher rez. monitor.

I would go for TMM's advice, except not getting the Wacom, get a medium sized SSD (256GB would be plenty). i7 only if he is serious, if he is casual i5 would do.

Why no Wacom? If hes doing ANY real editing he will need one. Hell even a Bamboo.

You could also argue that he should know what kind of computer he needs for what the user wants to get done, but that really assumes that it's being done professionally and knows the software inside and out. I suspect that isn't the case. It looks to me that photography is a hobby rather than a career. With said said, an i5 is a nice medium between cost and power. As far as the GPU is concerned, if the user is serious about GPU acceleration I wouldn't gimp it with a consumer grade graphics card. Workstation cards tend to do 2D better (quality wise,) than a typical consumer grade graphics card.

I think we're missing some information and since it's all being relayed via a proxy (aka. Cotton_Cup,) so we can't perfectly say what would be good for your friend.

All in all I think if he (pardon me if your friend's gender is female,) is doing this professionally then TMM is right, the faster the processor the more he'll like it. Otherwise, if it's just a hobby, I don't think it's necessary.

I agree but so is any high-end video card. I'm just saying that if you're really going to take that route, a faster consumer GPU won't give you better results than a slower workstation GPU for the same price. All in all, the GPU shouldn't be a big consideration when it comes to photo editing. Heck, a HD 4000 would probably be enough if he grabs an i7.

It is for the most part. I just suggested a low end NVIDIA card as they play better with Adobe products.

saw the cables when the rig was open it looked like those psu's from pentium lol but not really but yeah didn't look right at least to some psu's i've seen like those from fsp or seasonic or corsair and a few thermaltake.

Probably all the techie talk went above his head and sounded like it was going to cost him more than what he was willing to pay.

Then some idiot comes along and talks down everything you say which he was most probably waiting for so he could take the easy way out and buy a pre-built machine with the false confidence that it is just as good a what you had planned.
