Help on Memoy for the Motherboard

Hello all,

I need some help understanding memory.

I'm upgrading my Motherboard -CPU - Memory

I'm look at ASRock X79 Champion LGA 2011 Intel X79 motherboard

The CPU I was thing of getting
Intel Core i7-3820 Sandy Bridge-E 3.6GHz (3.8GHz Turbo Boost) LGA 2011 130W Quad-Core Desktop Processor

I have a question on the memory, I'm not sure on what this numbers mean
8×240pin DDR3 2500+(OC)/2133(OC)/1866(OC)/1600/1333/1066

When i'm looking at the specs the DDR3 2500+,2133 and 1866 are OC numbers. Is that Correct. I need to be looking at DDR3 1600 memory. I'm assuming that the 1600 is the fastest memory that the motherboard can support.

no that is memory controler on ur cpu!! and motherboard suport all those speeds..
so u can get any of thiese..just in motherbard bios set up that ur memory run in her speed(OC)

No, the default speed is 1600. You can make the board load the memory profile as what it is, like 2600 including voltage and timings. 1600 is not a limit on the board, it's the limit the memory will go to.

If i'm buying 16GB should I get 2x8GB or 4x8GB, which one is better?

The platform is quad channel get 4 x 4 G. Why 16G? 4 x 2G should be pleanty of ram unless you need it.

BTW 4 x 8G would be 32G.

I would get IvyBridge if I were you. It has PCIe 3.0 and SB-E does not plus Ivy is dual channel not quad. You will not really notice any performance difference and Z77 boards are cheaper.

I will look into it again, but doesn't the IvyBridge run hotter than the sandy.

Sandy E processors run hotter too. Don't have a lot of experience with 3820 but I would not let that worry you. They run warmer not hotter but most Ivy's use considerable amount of less voltage.
