Windows 8 rollback to 7 or XP

Not sure were to post this at so hope this is the right place.

I have a customer that used Xp and outlook express forever. Well her pc died and she got one of her friends grandkids to help her get a new computer- In turn came with windows 8 - the kid was suppose to help her learn it and stayed about 10 minutes and left.
Long story short- She HATES windows 8 and want to go back to XP.

My question is: Can I install XP on it with out to much driver trouble or is that not a good idea?

It is an HP p6-2330 and of course only list Windows 8 drivers on the site.

Not a good idea. MS doesn't support XP anymore. Its about as secure and Sponge Bobs skull. Install Windows 7.

This would be optimal, but if she won't she won't.

Windows 7 would be the best thing here.

I thought Microsoft was still providing security updates to XP, just not any bug fixes. Anyhow, yes. You will have A LOT of trouble finding drivers for XP.

If the new PC has a touchscreen, stick with Windows 8 and help her find some tutorials. Otherwise, Windows 7 and show her how to search in the start menu for things.

Well you have to try and persuade her to move towards Windows 8. Sooner or later microsoft is gonna leave windows XP behind and when the time they stopped supporting windows 7, you would have windows 10 or something?

Damn, beat me to it, lol.

I was gonna suggest Stardock's Start8 for $5, but it's the same idea.

If not, then install Windows 7. XP is great, but obsolete, will likely not have working drivers for that hardware and support is drying up day by day.

It ends in 2020, so at their current 3 year release schedule yes.

I'd recommend getting the 'Stardock' version of start8, it's more stable(and refined). Then just set it to boot right to the desktop and put her icons on the desktop, it won't be much different than that she was used to.

I wouldn't recommend trying to downgrade...I recently attempted it myself with an ENVY 6-1129wm...no luck, the drivers weren't compatible.

I've been using the Stardock version of start8 for several months on a daily basis without a single issue.

Best,

LC

Depends on the manufacturer...MSI users will play hell trying to do it. Pretty painless with Toshiba models...it's a gamble when it should not have to be. This may help if you decide to stick with Win 8... http://www.davescomputertips.com/201...n-acclimation/

Wait so you're saying there are driver problems reverting from Windows 8 to Windows 7, or do you mean to Windows XP?

Again, depends on the machine. No matter what OS you are reverting to there will be issues on many of the newer laptops.

If you have customers and come to a forum to ask this question, I most certainly would not be in need of any services by your company.

Well, that was very helpful.

I would go to some HP forums and inquire what others have experienced first hand on that particular model of laptop. Good luck!

I stand corrected!

My mistake. Anyway I would still go with Windows 7 in the end. Its gonna be more supported MUCH longer.

Agreed, I wouldn't downgrade to XP. Plus, you can actually legally downgrade to Windows 7 from 8, so being legal is a plus.

From a quick glance at the parts, I'd say you have a decent chance of running Windows XP - that is, if you really want to. All the Windows 7 and "fixed" Windows 8 suggestions are better course to pursue.

Not helpful smartass... LOL Just want to gather other peoples opinions.

Well I know that I should stick to win8 but she does not like it AT ALL and wants to change to something else. I will defiantly look into the programs to add the start menu back and boot to it.

one problem is that she really wants to keep outlook express... any other alt that would be close to the same - How is Thunderbird or ect....?

BTW is is a desktop with no touchscreen

I use Classic Shell in Win8. I recommend it. Iobit Start8 is also popular.

Thunderbird is a good option after using Outlook Express. It is straightforward. You might need to install a few add-ons/extensions. I recommend
- close tab on ESC
- copy as plain text
- printing tools
