I think the Lumia 920 is better than the HTC 8X. I can tell you Windows Phone 8 is good and the Lumia 920 is solid but I can't tell you if it is better than Android.

I think if you use your phone as a phone with occassional browsing, texting, and an app or two, Windows Phone 8 will probably be the better choice. If you are going to install dozens of apps and basically use your phone as a computer substitute, Android is probably better.

If you think you're going to use text-to-speech and speech-to-text a lot, go with Windows Phone 8.

Better yet, just go to a phone store and check all four out and decide what you like best.

As someone who owns the Lumia 920 and an HTC One X, I would go with Android. There are just so many things better about the OS. There are basic things that Windows 8 is lacking which are frustrating and sometimes the interface can be more of a hassle than anything.

Smaller screen, lower resolution, IPS screen versus AMOLED, 4x more flash memory, etc.

Windows Phone has standard programs for contacts, Office, mapping, taking pictures, taking video, etc. If you can be specific about "usual," I can probably tell you.

Having toyed with my sgs3 for the best part of 6 months now,i can safely say it is a properly versatile piece of kit..i'd go for the 64gb model which wasn't available when I got mine :/...expensive,but worth it if you can't wait for the sgs4..
The only real detractor I can think of is that it's a bit big..

i'd assume windows phone 8 has its own app store, though don't expect quite as many apps as you'd fine on android.

Well, I'm going to be contrary and say that I think you should go for a W8 phone.

I was a long-time Droid user (I owned the Droid, Droid x, Droid 4, and used my old roomies Droid 3, co-worker's SGII + Droid MAXX, brother's SGIII), and I made the switch to WP7 back when Verizon launched their only one almost 2 years ago, but I switched to ATT two months ago so I could get the Nokia 920. It's a beautiful phone, it's very intuitive to use, and I really prefer it over the Droids. If you are vested in Microsoft in any way (ie. Zune/Xbox music user, play Xbox a lot, Use Office a lot) then everything syncs to your phone, without using any 3rd party software.

As mentioned above, the text-to-speech is leaps and bounds better than Android.

The biggest short-coming of WP8 is the marketplace. It IS getting better though, and more and more apps are showing up. I've been using WP for about 2 years now, so I've seen it grow up and offer a wider variety of apps. Also, anyone who says WP is bad, it's true.....2-3 years ago. There were a lot of basic functions missing, but a lot of that was handled in the 7.5 update. 8 builds on that and really refines an already good starting platform to put it on par with Android and Apple.

That being said, it's not for everyone. So you should go to the store and play with each of them. Pick the one that suits you best, and then come let us know what you picked.

Good luck.

PS. I am extremely pleased with my Nokia 920, it's a great phone, with great features that were important to me at time of purchase, 2 months ago.

watched nokia lumia 920 and 820 both today..seems really gr8..
820 is fine but 920 is overpriced compared to it though..
820 has only one speakers and if osmething is pressing on speakers (like in pocket), u cant hear ringtone even..
if we can get variety of apps and all essential apps, then it's really good..cost is minus point as compared to android, specially nexus 4..

still waiting for google store for nexus 4..if not aailable wirhin a week or so, then i may think to buy lumia 920.

If you're going to buy a Windows Phone don't skimp out, get the Lumia 920. The camera itself is worth it. That being said, go into a store and try out both a Windows Phone and a newer Android phone to see which you feel more comfortable with. Having used both IOS and Android, Windows Phone makes my life a heck of a lot more efficient (live tiles plus a very fluid UI).

I'd say go with the nexus 4 - I've had a nexus 1 and a Galaxy nexus (the 3rd nexus phone) and they were both fantastic and gained value over the years as more updates were released for them. The nexus 4 is an improvement again on the galaxy nexus.

As for text to speech I will admit I have not heard/tried it on a windows phone, however with android 4.1 (what is on the Galaxy S3) and above (the nexus 4 is on android 4.2) the speech recognition is all done on the device and is wonderfully fast and accurate (for my british accent anyway). The text to speech is also fantastic - if you look at some youtube videos of google now's search you will probably hear the very cheerful female text to speech voice for android (although there are more in the play store if you want to have a different voice for your phone's text to speech).

Windows Phone is an interesting proposition and I do applaud Microsoft for their efforts however I personally would not use it until it's clear that it is gaining support from app makers - it is early days for the platform still and for someone like me who uses google's services such as google translate, youtube, gmail etc the lack of support for those services via apps on windows phone would be a hindrance (as well as other app makers - an app on ios will have an android counterpart and visa versa - not so with windows phone at the moment).

How Windows Phone Is Turning Its Slim App Selection Into a Strength

Windows Phone has tons of advantages by sharing components (like .NET and Windows Marketplace) with it's Windows brethren. It takes less effort to produce a quality program for both platforms than it does for Android and iOS. Microsoft is pursuing quality over quantity.

Most people only use maybe 10 apps to get functionality not provided by default with the device. If Windows Phone has something functionally the same as those 10 apps on iOS or Android, the argument is moot.

Case in point: pick the features you absolutely can't live without on any phone and compare them. Are they built into the OS? If there is not, is there an app available to add that functionality? Does the solution meet your expectations? Answer those questions for each functionality to find which platform is best for you.

I have used both phones with Residential Voip Service, and in my opinion, the app store for android is far superior.

Windows Phone 8 is better for one reason. You dont need an app for everything you do I find that everything I want is built into my Lumia 822,oh and Nokia has some prety nice apps they preload.

Windows 8 Phone, I'd say however possibly ask to try them both out in your local store? See what you feel best suits you.

I agree completely. It had been a talk of the town around me for a while and I finally agree to Android one and trust me interface, as you said is not at all comparable with Android.
