7870 question

I got my card a few weeks ago and notice when the screen sleeps and I come back to comp I get sometimes random colored snow all over but not heavy and just now it was the snow with fat black lines across screens. If I move mouse over the glitchy areas they disappear.
I never had an issue like this with my 5770.
I'm thinking defective, but not sure if drivers are cause. This only happens on desktop when idle random times. Not in games

I had the issue with my first 6950. 6 months later it could not hold clocks above 667 very suddenly.

You could try changing drivers and if it still does the same then its RMA time.

I'm using beta 4 currently and realized this happened on a previous driver so defective indeed.

I can say hello to my 5770 again for a while lol.

My 7870 does something like this too...you're not crazy.

The snow thing happens if I mess with certain stuff in CCC pertaining certain settings, which is probably similar to your sleep situation. I only notice it because my background is black. It goes away after a couple seconds.

The glitchy black crap I also can relate. Seemed to happen pretty much only occassionally and when writing a post/reply here on TPU or once it happened on xbit. I have no idea why it happens, although I figured perhaps a driver or heat/clock issue with the ram. I down-clocked my graphics ram (from 1352 to 1333...top rock-stable is probably in-between somewhere) and I haven't seen it happen since...but also messed with other stuff as well (like de-checking constant voltage in afterburner, which I had checked for some reason).

Whatever the cause...it is fixable.

Are you overclocked?

I wasn't overclocked at the time. It was stock idle would run 400/1200 dual screen desktop gaming 1000 core /1200 mem stock. I did play with overclocking could only go 1125/1450.

I'm reading on newegg all the negative reviews for 7870's and many of the same exact issues occur as you and me.

Im rma'ing later today. I might get another 7870 or just get a 660 hard choices since I dont want this hassle again.

I have 7870's and since December have never had the issue you describe.

My rig never turns off only monitor sleeps, resumes fine with no lines or pixels.

660's are slower wouldn't want anything less than a 660 ti or you could get a 7950.

We have a computer at work with the exact same issue. Weird "snow" as you call it, but if you put a box over it or mouse over it disappears, and doesnt seem to cause any problems. We reimaged it for other reasons, and it never happened again.
