MSI Intros Radeon HD 7950 Twin Frozr Boost Edition OC Graphics Card

MSI updated its Radeon HD 7950 graphics card lineup with a model that features the new HD 7950 Boost Edition ASIC, and the company's workhorse performance-segment VGA cooler, Twin Frozr III. The card features factory-overclocked speeds of 880 MHz core, 960 MHz PowerTune Boost frequency, and 5.00 GHz memory. It features 3 GB of GDDR5 memory across a 384-bit wide memory interface. The Twin Frozr III cooler uses a pair of 80 mm PWM-controlled Propeller-blade fans ventilating an aluminum fin stack. The cooler, according to MSI, keeps the GPU up to 10°C cooler, running 13.7 dB quieter than AMD's reference-design cooling solution. Expected this card to be priced around US $330, a variant that sticks to AMD reference clock speeds could be cheaper.

And that's your right! (I prefer the newer revisions as well), but when I show a Twin Frozr 4 to some other guys they might say they prefer the "older" look of the TFII/TFIII.

Hate to say it, but my reference 6870 runs cooler than my TwinFrozrII 6870. It looks nice and it will cool the GPU well, but it recycles the air back into the case where the reference throws it out the back. +1 for looks, -1 for effectiveness.

My MSI hd7950 OC TF III BE does not jump above 61C on full load. Reach 1.2GHz/GPU

Don't get me wrong, I'm not bashing MSI. Both of my 6870s are from MSI. I just don't believe that the TwinFrozrII (I have to correct myself, maybe the 3 and 4 are better,) offers better cooling than reference under load. Only when the fans are set absurdly low (and temps start climbing upwards of 75*C then the TwinFrozr will do better, but with the same exact fan profile, clocks, and voltage, forget it.

Also the more you overclock it, the further the reference card pulls ahead. I think it has to do with how the reference card throws the air out the back.

The reference has a radial fan, they should never have the same fan profile as a Twin Frozr!
I don't think I've seen any reference card that beats a proper Twin Frozr model.

Everything possible, I had trouble with this board from ASUS, reached 96C @ 900MHz in MSI Kombustor, have put an excessive amount of thermal paste. After I cleaned and put back cooling, everything was perfect.

The same on this MSI GeForce GTX 560 Ti 1GB OC

I had a similar experience with my 6870 Hawk (temps jumped to near 100C w/fans @100%)- a fresh/proper application of TIM and the card nows runs 10C cooler than when new and the fan profile is much lower

The TFIII is a really good cooler imo.... MSI's TIM application on their cards- not so good...

I noticed that. I had to replace it on the reference 6870 of mine. Maybe the TwinFrozrII is good but the TIM job sucks?
