5970 dead. Bake it in the oven?

So my 5970 started out with an intermittent problem of cutting out and you could grab it where the 8 pin power connector is and wriggle it and it would come good again. Now I get 2b bios error code on my X58 board and it will not post with the card. I chucked in my old 4890 for now but my main question is this. How many people on this forum have baked a card back to life in the oven? I am seriously considering it as I have nothing to loose. How long do I bake for and how hot do i have the oven?

Its a last resort. You should use flux and a heat gun with a temp sensor. Temp is critical. Check some youtube videos for GPU reflow

Hi

This would indicate a loose or broken connection at the power plug? or power lead

I thought it was the power connector at first too. But turned out it is the card itself.

okay so youve tried with 2 cards and failed.

I have baked a 9800GTX I received from a co-worker that had memory artifacts and it cured it. It worked as a folder 24/7 for quite some time after that until I moved and the power bill was no longer a fixed amount. I have also resurected a 7600GT by backing it too. I always remove the cooler and everything plastic that I can.

dont bake it unless you already said godbye to that card, you should know that baking a card only makes it good again for a short period and then its likely to die for ever better seek professional help.

if you put a volt meter on the inputs [back of pcb] where the 8 pin comes through do you get the right readings??? Baking is is the last resort !!!
"Code 2Bh invoke video bios" do you get the same code in another MB???

Have not tried card in another mainboard yet as it has a waterblock fitted. do not have a volt meter to get readings. I suppose I should fit the stock cooler and try it in my other pc before I do try to bake it. I have already accepted it is dead and gone so baking it really dosnt worry me. I was curious to know how many have done it.

I have done it on 10 or so cards but ALL had mem/artifact problems & all but 1 worked Note that all of these card were from recycle bins or ebay. You should remount the stock cooler & try in another MB

Get a reflow pen , reflow all connectors then as high a temp as poss for a few mins only at a time and prepped on a tray so you don't giggle or move it until its cold.
Ive always used a soldering iron and heat gun bit baked successfuly once

I must admit that I have not tested the PSU other than put another graphics card into the pc and have it function perfectly again. I will strip the waterblock off the card and fit the stock cooler tomorrow and test it in another pc. Fairly certain though that it is indeed the card. Will be happy if I am wrong but then I will need a new psu

By wiggling the Molex plug for the video card, you make the tinny female connectors on that pony tail Bigger. And you might not be getting a good connection, try using a small pointy pick see if you can reduce the openings of the female plugs. Or if you can swap out that ponytail for a good one that was not wiggled. Ive backed motherboard, Xbox360'S. They all work but baking is a very last resort!!
good luck!

I understand this and do not think it was the plug Unless that part of the psu is dead (the 8 pin lead) I am most inclined to think it is the card. Oh how I hope it is just the psu as I loved my 5970. I wasnt wriggling the plug to bring the card back but more or less flexing the card at that point. None of the female connections are stretched.

Lol!
you said you wiggled the power plug to make the card work, if the female plugs gets elongated they wont make proper contact(voltage issue!) But what do I know......................

I said that I wiggled the card right about where the 8 pin power connector is. I too understand that wriggling a plug can round out the connections.

I understand that you are trying to help me and I am gratefull but I have already looked at the possibility of the plug being faulty. I would not have drained my loop and stripped the pc down all before I checked for little things like that. I am fairly certain that the graphic card has taken a dirt nap..

Edit : My The reason for opening this thread was to ask if any members had ever baked a graphic card back to life in the oven. That is all. I do appreciate help from others and I will try the card to make sure it is dead before I go putting it in the oven lol.
Here is my rig.
