Time to try a used 7970

Time to try a used 7970 I just bought. I want to see if there is any "seat of the pants" difference from my 670.
I doubt it because of my monitor size...we shall see.

What drivers do you recommend and why? Any current issues with AMD drivers I should be aware of?

Why even bother trying a 7970 if you already own a 670? If your 670 can't run something just add 100 to the core and be content?

also, switching drivers from the different brands can be a major headache and cause long lasting issues.

Why bother?
What kind of question is that?
That's what computing is all about...to me.
Should I just sit here and stare at all my 670s?
Thats no fun.
I have no issues with my 670s at all. I just want to experiment.
And I got the card for free.
Now you get it?

i agree, but when i switched from NVidia to ati, i did have problems. PhysX is loaded into most game files and that will probably freeze/lock some games. you probably know to do a driversweep (and remove PhysX) and registry removal. make a restore point or clone of good settings if you can! definitely use latest drivers, no one has moaned yet! run benchmark and let us see a comparison

edit: sli vs single 7970 may be a bit unfair lol try 3 benchmarks! sli vs, 670 vs and 7970

That's what I assumed when I read the OP.

You're awfully negative and jumping to the wrong conclusion. I love trying new hardware, weather or not it's faster than what I have.

That's what I'm talking about, loving trying new hardware.
And I know all the issues with switching platforms, been there, done that. No problem.

Do not remove PhysX as it is needed by a lot of games and them games will refuse to work without it.

PhysX might be an nvidia thing but 90% of games do the PhysX on the cpu.

Raw, You should crunch that 7970 if you end up not using it in your main rig. Those will put out pretty good points!

I totally agree. If for some reason you don't like it you can always build a cruncher around it.

@RAW

I think trying this out will be interesting for you. Why not run nvidia and amd together for the hell of it?! They should play well together. Note that nvidia throw their toys out of the pram whenever the driver sees a non-nvidia graphics card in the system, since it disables PhysX.

If you can run all three cards together then go for it!

^^^THIS! The comments about PhysX being a problem are not true. Something else on user's end. In fact since installing 13.2b6 I've not had any reason to roll back to b5 either. If you ask me AMD is kicking Nvidia's ass lately, even on drivers.

Sometimes, PhysX software is needed to run certain games, so having it installed should not post a problem.

And I get that part about trying new hardware just because.....I do that as well. Like my 2nd rig, I could have easily gone SB/IB but what's the fun in yet another Intel build? So, I opted for an AMD FX build, was briefly on an FX4100/Asus M5A97 EVO before moving on to an FX8120 + Asus Crosshair V Formula. Guess what? Just swapped the FX8120 with an FX8350 and the latter is definitely faster. That's the fun of building something new, unfamiliar since I hadn't build an AMD rig since years back. Last AMD rig I'd built was an old AM2 X2 4200+ IIRC.

Solid 2 weeks now using the 7970... not so impressed as using just one 670 seems faster in everything I do with MY setup.
Games like BF3 and COD play better, are more fluid and fps are more solid and don't fluctuate like they do with the AMD.
I'm back to Nvidia for now for my main machine, once again. I was fun though, experimenting.
I'm selling it today to my neighbor who has a larger monitor, it probably will work for him better than for me.
I'm NOT trying to start a flame war here in any way, shape or form. Don't take it that way.

I use both AMD and Nvidia in different machines and I like them both. Hell, I have a 6870 X2 that I really like and use a lot in a different machine which is quite capable as a gaming machine. Again, small 23" monitor.

It's actually good to have an opinion from someone who witnessed the difference for a whole 2 weeks on the same gen cards of both camps.

No, you should use them. I no longer understand why it's fun to buy stuff and then just look at the stuff. If you got it for free sure but getting stuff for the sake of getting stuff is just trying to fill that empty space inside you with more empty space. Rantrant.
