AMD and Crystal Dynamics Collaboration Delivers "Tomb Raider" with TressFX

AMD today announced a collaboration with Crystal Dynamics following the launch of "Tomb Raider," one of the most highly anticipated PC games of 2013, and part of the AMD Gaming Evolved program. AMD and Crystal Dynamics worked together extensively on the development of "Tomb Raider," most notably with TressFX Hair, the world's first in-game implementation of a real-time, per-strand hair physics system. This leading-edge technology imparts one of the most iconic video game characters, Lara Croft, with an astonishingly lifelike appearance. With AMD Radeon graphics, gamers can unleash the full potential of this next-generation technology.

"With the launch of 'Tomb Raider' and TressFX Hair, AMD and Crystal Dynamics have radically pushed the boundaries of realism in the PC gaming experience," said Matt Skynner, corporate vice president and general manager, AMD Graphics. "Over the past several months, AMD has proven that the Gaming Evolved program is set to full throttle, and today's launch is a testament to AMD's ingenuity and innovation. Our team is working with the finest game developers in the world to ensure AMD Radeon HD 7000 Series graphics deliver the ultimate PC gaming experience."

AMD Radeon Graphics Core Next (GCN) is the ideal architecture for outstanding "Tomb Raider" performance. Built with numerous compute-driven effects like High Definition Ambient Occlusion (HDAO) and Depth of Field (DOF), "Tomb Raider" uniquely exploits the computing strengths of GCN architecture and the AMD Radeon HD 7000 Series, enabling an unrivaled gaming experience. "Tomb Raider" also fully supports AMD CrossFire technology, immersive AMD Eyefinity multidisplay technology and AMD HD3D stereo 3D. What's more, it is the first game in the franchise to take full advantage of DirectX 11, a direct result of Crystal Dynamic's collaboration with AMD Gaming Evolved.

"AMD and the Square Enix Studios, including Crystal Dynamics, have a long successful history of collaboration, starting with 'Deus Ex: Human Revolution' from Eidos Montreal," said Darrell Gallagher, studio head, Crystal Dynamics. "We continue this close PC gaming relationship with the latest edition of 'Tomb Raider.' The AMD Gaming Evolved engineers and the team at Crystal Dynamics worked for months to make TressFX Hair a reality – with tremendous success. We hope that gamers can best take advantage of the dynamic realism we've brought to Lara through AMD Radeon and Graphics Core Next."

"Never Settle: Reloaded" Redemption
Coupons for "Tomb Raider" included in the AMD Radeon "Never Settle: Reloaded" bundle are provided by resellers in select regions1 when customers purchase select AMD Radeon HD 7900 and HD 7800 Series graphics cards, and coupons can be redeemed on the AMD redemption portal.

I am running the game at 8x AA ultra settings with tressfx enabled, and getting a steady 60 fps on my 7950 sapphire at 1000 core.

also, it looks better then the video that was posted. much better in real time, the video only shows you the benchmark for the game.

the actualy game with those graphics settings i mentioned above at 1080p, its fucking amazing.

The game is gorgeous, still waiting for Nvidia to get proper SLI profiles up for my 660ti. Also I can turn TressFX on but it causes total freezes every 2-3 seconds or so so I'm sure it's either a SLI bug or some sort of AMD lock out at this time? Not sure but the game gives Crysis a run for it's money at 1440p maxed.

Well that's because he's using a NVIDIA card.

It should run better on AMD cards as this feature is clearly promoted and developed with and by AMD in mind.

They will, even though im surprised the beta released today wasn't the driver recommended for Tomb Raider. I guess the next one will.

Getting 52FPS as AVG from the tomb raider benchmark at ultimate settings with TressFX.

59FPS average same settings with TressFX off, maybe drivers but yeah it's eating a tonne of FPS from my point of view at the moment using the 13.2 Beta drivers

Well TressFX is direct compute based and by now we should know that all new Nvidia cards except the GTX Titan have their weaknesses in this sector.

The answer is simple: GeForce 600 Keplers have horrible compute performance (and no, the Titan isn't much better in this regard, just beefier), hence the crappy performance with it on...

Anyone remember how horrible the also do in DIRT Showdown with Adv. Lighting & Global Illumination ON? Yeah, same story.

i dont know about this new tom raider but in case of dirt showdown the poor performance of nvidia cards most likely not due to weak compute performance from nvidia 600 series cards alone. 6970 and 570 are neck to neck in most situation but oin dirt showdown 6790 easily beat 570 by a wide margin. also compute wise 570 should be better than gk104 but in dirt showdown 680/670 still pull ahead of gf100 cards.

Don't think so, it's supposed to run on DX11 capable cards from both AMD and nVidia. IF this were a situation in reverse, then yes, it'd prolly be an nV lockout much like how AA couldn't be enable with ATi/AMD cards back when Batman AA was launched. I'm not saying AMD is a benevolent company, they're not, but they seemed more willing to embraced new tech w/o resorting to such tactics.

Fairly certain the issue stems from the fact that Nvidia still hasn't released a driver for the game, let alone a proper SLI profile.

Bah I've noticed in game that only Lara's hair is effected by TressFX. Would have added a lot more immersion if they implemented it on all the characters.

I love the game... But I get a lot of distraction while playing and just staring at her from behind or at boobs... it kinda adds difficulty

And it runs really smooth on my 7970@1050Mhz and 4Ghz Xeon [~i7 930, but 32nm and 12MB L3]

The visual presentation of the xbox360 version - shown at E3 last year - was very impressive. I'm looking forward to see this one on the PC.

Basically what I was implying, I was answering the last part of your previous post about AMD locking it out for nV cards, which is not at all true.

some of us don't run the usual mon-fri schedule. I for example work in oil/gas fields, raining today so i'm not at work. Shouldn't past judgement before you know the facts of others, let a lone how they want to live their life.

Looks Awesome... No TressFX on Nvidia Though

I tried Tomb Raider this morning. Specs:

i5 Ivy bridge
8gb DDR3 2133
Nvidia 670 2gb SLI
Game installed on 240gb SSD
Nvidia Surround (3 monitor setup)
Resolution is 5760x1080 (or something close to that)

Game runs REALLY well except when TressFX is enabled. It runs terrible on my setup. Everything is maxed besides that. I love that they made the game to run on Nvidia Surround as some games look terrible and squished (COD BL2 I am looking at you). But Seriously looks amazing on 3 monitors. Everyone should give that a try!

It is pretty kickass! Though a lot of games do not run well in Surround, mostly due to not supporting the higher resolutions. Oh they will usually run in the higher resolution but everything looks terrible. It looks like your system might run 3 monitors with another 670. I bought 2 IPS LED monitors for $180 each (US currency as I see your in Australia). They are dirt cheap now a days.
