R600 DDR 3 works at 1600 MHz

On the highly anticipated R600 card, Fudzilla expects the on-board DDR3 modules to work at a modest 1600 MHz. We must however keep in mind that the R600 has a 512 bit memory controller, and that it will therefore have some impressive bandwidth.

As we already know, the GDDR4 version will come later and should have a clock even higher than 2000 MHz milestone. The core of the R600 from ATI will tick away at 750 to 800 MHz.

I had just come across this link a couple days ago and I'm not sure if you all have seen the card yet (although you probably have) but I had not so this is what it looks like for those that missed it like I did

I really like the idea of removable dust covers.

What r600 cards are going to first be released again? and how much do you suspect they will cost?

Hopfully since the first ones are ddr3 they will be cheaper than the ggr4, but I doubt it.

GDDR3 at 1600? the 1950XT's GDDR3 stocks at 1800 and is capable of 2Gig, I can only assume that they will introduce mid ranged first? saving the GDDR4 for top end.

price is always the deciding factor, anyone who wants to make a smart decision will wait, i know i am. cant know till they come out, maybe for even two or three months, the 7900gt's price bombed when the 7950 came out

1600mhz GDDR3 on a 512 bit bus would yield 102.4gb of memory bandwidth, 2000mhz GDDR4 would yield 128gb of bandwidth. Compared to the 1800mhz on a 256 bit bus of the x19x0 which only yields about 58gb.

GDDR3 is certainly not a bad way to go and 512mb-1gb of the stuff pushing 102gb of bandwidth is certainly nothing to laugh at. Nvidia proved that already and to my knowledge the fastest retail 8800GTX pushes its 768mb of GDDR3 at 2ghz (on its 384 bit bus), which would yield "only" 96gb of memory bandwidth.

Hasn't it been proven that this extra bandwidth on a video card is just a placebo effect on performance? In other words you are not going to see any noticeable difference from 128 GB of bandwidth then you do out of 58GB of bandwidth.

Correct and at the end of the day, its also down to the quality of the chips, for example the 1950XT has 1.0ns chips, I am guessing that if the first R600's out will stock at 1600Mhz then we are talking probably 1.1ns which is not even the best available for GDDR3 let alone the issue of not initially having GDDR4 available!

At the end of the day, it may actually be a brilliant marketing tactic if it is a mid ranged card they are bringing out initially, unlike most previous release between the Big 2 as it will not only be quick but it will have immediate mainstream rather than enthusiast appeal, everyone will rave about it's performance (hopefully) and then shortly after the top of the line comes out and just blows everything away!

I dont want to put up with abhorrent prices, I Dont care what the card can push. If it is a mainstream card, its not a bad deal. Youll have ATI DX10 in a pretty kick ass card and just a smidge more of waiting for the highend. Good deal ATI. BTW, this card will have removeable dust covers???
