R600 external is Lasso
We reported a while back that ASUS isn't the only one developing a solution for external graphic cards - ATI is in the game too, with its Lasso technology.
Fudzilla has more information regarding Lasso. It will be supported by the external version of the R600, and will allow you to link more than 2 cards for mindblowing graphics performance. Even odd numbers of cards should be supported - connecting five R600 GPUs should pose no problems. The external R600, codenamed Lasso, connects to the computer via an external PCIe port. It's in fact an internal PCIe card that provides the external PCIe connector.

well this sounds Fing awesome. This would allow people to go back to micro cases with silent fans, and just plug in le-uber giganto external box for some uber gaming.

I want a standard finalized providing PCIe x8 bandwidth externally. Make the cable length and cable composition requirements top of the line to support that bandwidth, and give laptop users the ability to enjoy this. Honestly, that's where this technology has the potential to really shine.
It's Christmas Eve and I've driven 2 hours to family. I have my 14" laptop with C2D, 2GB of ram, and GMA950 graphics that I can entertain myself with as the family is BORING. Then, the next day we tear open presents, and by 2pm I'm back home. I put my laptop off to the side, setting it down onto its dock. The dock supports powering the laptop, and also has my wireless mouse/keyboard setup plugged into it. I then plug in the single PCIe x8 cord to hook up my R600/G80/R500/G70/whatever, powering up my 21" Gaming monitor. You have full mobile prowess and battery life, but when you get home, you just dock it, connect the external graphics solution, and you're rivaling desktops. I wish they would have made a provision for this in the latest PCI Express update they did. |

The concept is really basic, for normal PCs that is, just a plug that goes on the PCI-E 16x slot, then a cable, outside case, plug that to your GPU and you got Lasso. I'm surprised its taking so long for it to come out.
