Wow vague!

Check out this thread: http://forums.techpowerup.com/showthread.php?t=30822

And/or be a bit more specific. What will this computer be used for? Light, everyday stuff like email, internet, or gaming? Multimedia work? Photoshop? Music, etc.?

If you don't game, a motherboard with integrated graphics should suffice (while saving you money).

But with video editing you would need at least a gFx. And for the budget minded 8500 or upcoming ati 2300 would do. Workstation cards are too expensive X_x

An Asus P5B and a core 2 duo E4300 or less. I know its not a pentium D system but it will work and prices are nice.

You could also go the way of the X2 Am2 series as prices for the procs and mobos are dirt cheap.

by the end of the summer the Q6600 quad core 2.4ghz CPU will be around $350 and that will be in your budget for the 5-$600 range.

you might say, why do i need a quad core for what i'm using the computer for, but it will be
a better investment long term (as if there is such a thing in computers lol) because your needs may change and you wont have to upgrade later. video editing will be faster too.
