As far as I know, you will have to do a clean install. On another note, that computer of yours will barely handle XP. Your RAM is going to hurt you alot.

You can install it without doing a clean install.....I have an old dell inspiron 5000 laptop and i've done the same thing on it before it had win98se i just put the windows xp cd in and selected upgrade or you can do a full install your choice...... It should do ok on xp my laptop is a pentium 3 600mhz 512mb ram but i ran xp at first with 128mb it was a little slow but not that bad it would be a good idea to upgrade the ram a little though.

Is this forum about trying to help people or criticizing what people have to say or what they say?

Actually, I had finished installing Win XP Pro on an AMD K6-II 450Mhz with 128MB RAM (40 dedicated to video). Topped it off with an install of Nlite on it. I just disabled all the "visual extras".

No, the forum is about helping people. Better typing would just be easier on the eyes is all I'm saying. The computers at my school only have 128 MB of RAM and they are sooo slow...but if you do it right you will be able to do all the basic stuff you need to.

I know I am not a moderator, even though I had a hard time reading it and was able to, that is not what the forums are here for (to criticize).

Many others will agree with me when I say, "if you have nothing nice to say ..... "......

thanks everyone for your replys. they were helpful. the reason i am going to upgrade this old computer is because i am getting high speed internet and at&t says that i must have windows 2000 or xp for operating system. my newer computer has windows xp so i thought i would buy another copy of xp for the old computer. and about the ram i agree it is not much at 128mb, but they said it would work, if not i will probably add some more if it is easy to get and not too expensive.

Definitely bigscale, a stick of 256MB would greatly improve it and wouldnt be overkill.
