Sure they can, just don't install the monitor driver. Use the Windows Plug-n-Play Monitor driver instead. I have a 1440x900 Samsung and run the benches all the time. Just look in Alcpone's 3dMark06 thread.

My Acer runs 3dmark06. Anywho, back on topic.

Great monitor and pretty cheap. Ive seen some of their bigger LCDs on display and its not too bad.

I am suprised you dont know why the Dell price tag is lower, as well as why the 30" monitor is lower now too (it was all over HardForums ).

Anyway, there are 2 main reasons for the low (or lower) price tags.
1. The market has more competition now from LCD monitors sizes 17" - 30" with other manufacturers pricing them much lower than Dell was/is.

2. Dell now has a panel lottery and does not post the LCD info on the back like they used to. So now you don't know what type of panel you have. Plus Dell has been using the less expensive panels as of late. From what I have seen they dont really use SIPS panels anymore, they use MVA panels.

Since I'm broke I rarely go into the Displays subforum.

Plus I forgot the price hike starts above 19".

The price hike from a 19" to a 20/20.1" is not that big of a difference anymore since there is much more competition and the price of the TN panel has fallen.
A 19" generally costs a little below $200 US.
A 20/20.1" can be had for around $220-300 US Dollar (most are around $250US).

I got my HANNS-G 19inch widescreen for $129 dollars. It just has 700:1 contrast instead of the 1000:1. In fact tigerdirect has a 19inch widescreen today for $129.
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...5&Sku=N61-1900

Does not look to bad IMO.

Hanns-G is a low end budget maker for LCD monitors.
They dont use quality parts.
If you want a crisper and clearer picutre (and better quality), you should spend more on a 19" LCD.

Take a look here and learn more about LCDs under the LCD section (near the bottom of the 1st post) http://forums.techpowerup.com/showthread.php?t=30822

Understood, but youd be surprised at what quality this cheap stuff gives. Ive delt with dell monitors and all sorts, maybe I need to stack them all up next to each other cause I never really saw a massive difference.

I have a Hanns.G monitor as well. Honestly, when you get down the panels in LCD's, they use the same el cheapo panels in low end models. The whole 19" 1440x900 5ms spec gives away that its a TN panel.

The vertical resolution will probably make it unactractive to most. Anecdotally, a 720p LCD TV screen is 1366 x 768, aspect = 1.78. This is 1440 x 900, aspect = 1.6. Whatever that means...

TV's have a higher aspect ratio because they are 16:9, and widescreen computer lcd's are 16:10

AKA tv's are wider than computer monitors.

Yep, most of these 19 inchers are the same panel. They just have different cases and electronics. I need to find a good 8-bit panel, personally. These 6-bit panels aren't cutting it for me, I've been spoiled by my iMac's screen. lol

While some (samsung) may manage 1280x1024, a lot dont (or its compacted to fit, and it blurs)

The panels have a vertical res of 900, so the 1024 height (of 1280x1024) isnt possible - if it was natively possible, the screens would use a higher res to begin with.

My LG L1920P does 1280x1024 very nicely. Shit, I'm even running that on my 17" Dell LCD at work.

yeah 17" / 19" non-widescreens do it easily. Their native res IS 1280x1024. My point was that the 19" wides quite often cant - their vertical res is limited to 900, not 1024.

Congrats to all those whos monitors can however, lucky break for you.

Yeah, but who cares if it looks crappy in a benchmark?

I haven't encountered a 19" wide that isn't capable of running 3dMark06 @ 1280x1024. Everyone that I know that has one, is able to run 1280x1024, if they use the PnP Monitor Driver, instead of the manufacturer driver.
