Getting Started

First things first, you need to know several things about your copmputer. To find out a lot of that information you can view about your Hardware in the Devices manager or similar time consuming methods or you can simply
download CPU-Z.

I thought that I would let you know that I found a typo.

Well, I want to add a new section and have done some reading, but won't really have the time to read all I need in order to add the new section. But it's going to be called, Bus Speed, Why You Need to Understand It!

So once again, I'm calling out to the faithful of TPU for some assistance. I have seen quite a few questions in threads concerning FSB/HTT etc. I understand the Intel side of the equation pretty well, and I'm sure I could use some more knowlege there, but I am pretty much clueless as far as AMD's. I don't think a full history would be required, but I figured the technology from Athlon Slot A's to current, and Pentium 4 Netburst to Current (which really doesn't change much to my knowlege). But anyone willing to help me please feel free to contact me, any information welcome. I believe it will be a very helpful addition, and I want it to be correct and easy to understand. So if someone wants to feed me some AMD information, or even write up the AMD part of it that I can edit in, that would be great! Again thanks to all those who've supported this guide, and I look forward to that support once again!

ALso, I wanted to suggest an alternate method for overclocking Mobility Radeons. You can use ATI Tray Tools. Works a treat on my iMac with the Mobility X1600.

Hey all, just wanted to let anyone still checking up on this thread that it has now become a TPU ARTICLE!!! I would like to thank TPU and W1Z for they're graciousness and allowing it to become an article on TPU for all to read. I will be changing some of the format of this forum based guide since it directly reflects upon the article itself, and would like to add some images, screenshots, etc, unfortunately I'm not a photoshopper and don't have much for screenshots. If you would like to help out there and donate some images to the cause I would be very thankful! Also, I want to keep adding to this guide/article to keep it informative and helpful, so keep the suggestions coming!

Well I've been really busy, and just become a BF2142 addict with a few of my friends in town...so between 50-70+hr work weeks and that I've not had the time to update this guide. I have had a couple of suggestions, and to those I will do my best to add them when I do attain some free time. I've also noticed this guide/thread has hit 8,000+ views, which to me is AMAZING! I am glad this is helping so many, again I thank TPU and Multi-IT for hosting this thread as a guide, and to any whom may want to, please contact me and we will most likely be able to work out a deal (as long as you don't have a pride issue with posting copywrite to me and links to TPU). 1st of all thanks for writing the guide, I found it very useful and I registered just so I can give my thanks and ask for some help Im currently using :

IP-35 w/ e6550 l719a655.
FSB: 451 (will NOT budge above this)
Ram: Crucial ballistix DDR2 800mhz. Im running 1:1 and with 451 fsb its running at ~900. I tried 5-5-5-15timings w/ 2.2 v
pci-e freq: 100 (like you said)
pci clock sync mode: Im not sure if diff manufactors name it differently but I cant see to find this option in my bios
vcore: 1.35 but I went as high as 1.47
cpu vtt: 1.2000
ICH: 1.5, 1.55, 1.60
NB: 1.25 but went up to 1.53
cpu gtlref: I tried all 4 options 61.5 - 67
All extra power saving options were disabled except cpu temp
Multi set to 7x

Temps are 38 degrees on orthos 20 min blend test using speedfan and coretemp to measure

The problem: I CANNOT go above 451 fsb. Does anyone have any suggestions and if anyone needs more specific specs please let me know

Thanks very much for your support! I am glad that you enjoyed this thread/article, and you will find TPU is an excellent source for information and help! Make sure your PCI is locked at 33.3, but by now it should've been a problem. What's the longest test you've ran Orthos? If you can pass 20 minutes at your current settings then try overnight. If you can pass overnight, then you should be very stable!

It seems you are doing very well so far, but I do not know a whole lot about tuning the P-35 chipset as I haven't had the experience with it as of yet. I'm still very content with my P965/e6300 setup. What's your MB/NB temps reading at? 1.53 isn't too bad as far as NB voltage and from what I've found, MB temps are generally NB temps, at least on the boards I've had experience with.

But keep running stability for now, Memetest (for windows/or Boot), Orthos, ATI Tool's fuzzy cube/artifact scanner, etc. I've even ran all three all night on my PC before, but you don't get the full benefit of any program because they all need a part of what the other is trying to test, but it will do a severe stress on your system. And temps will increase for sure!

I recommend that you re-post this as a new thread in the section this guide is in to get more help, most people don't read back this far from what I've found (I could be wrong though!), so you may not be getting the help you can by posting in this thread. But again I appreciate your post! You are a great example of why people keep helping! Thank you for your efforts and time! I am sorry I couldn't help you with your issue, I may read up on some P35's, but I'm sure there's a setting somewhere that needs modified or a Bios flash or something. But do post again as a new thread and I'm sure you'll get some help, granted it may or may not be within the hour, but when the help does arrive, you'll really appreciate what TPU has to offer!

Will do! I have both BF2 and 2142 now, I enjoy both for sure! I usually play on weekends and tues and/or thurs depending on how busy I am. We'll definately have to team up and kick some ass!

Alright, it was Update time again, this time a new version, version 1.50. Ketxxx has just added a TON of great information on PC Technology! It's an amazing read, and anyone who needs something clarified should definately check it out! Version 1.50 is a quick edit in of his information, there will be some more format changing and image additions to that section. I would like to thank him for the kickass addition!

Thanks for the support, I hope that this guide is more helpful than a pain as I do realise it has grown a lot (it doubled in size with Ket's detailed additions, which are well worth it!). I can all too easily remember when I didn't understand or know what I should've when overclocking, and had luck on my side. I would rather see people take the extra time to be better prepared with the proper hardware, software and knowlege than just jump in and start changing settings.

I like how it's not only informative regarding overclocking.. but also with terminology, what things mean, why things work the way they do and what relates to what.
Which is really great for me, since I don't necessarily consider myself to be of any significant nerd status. lol

Hello, people im new to overclocking and all my setup is has follows....3gb geil 2x1 gb and 2 512 mb, motherboard ABIT FATALITY FP-IN9 SLI ATX, GRAPHICS 8800 GTS 320 MB OC, 160 GB sata HARD DRIVE, And A QUAD CORE Q6600 im trying very hard to overclock it but aint got a clue what settings should be what if someone could help me it would make me very happy man thanks people. dan

I just have one question about "spread spectrum" settings. You say to disable it or it will cause instability.

I am using a craptastic board (ECS RS485M-M) with a 3800+ X2 with some DDR2-800 RAM. The highest FSB I can achieve is 230MHz, that is with the spread spectrum set to +/-5%. If I disable it my system won't POST with an overclock.

Is my situation normal or is it just the board causing me problems?
