Announcing Windows Vista Service Pack 1 Beta

Nick White, a product manager for Microsoft, posted yesterday on the Windows Vista Team Blog that the first Vista SP1 beta will be released next month, while the final version is slated for the first quarter of 2008. The Vista SP1 will contain changes focused on addressing specific reliability and performance issues, support for new types of hardware, support for several emerging standards, lots of bug fixes, and final release of DirectX 10.1. Installation of Windows Vista SP1 will require a minimum of 7GB free disk space on x86 machines and 12GB free disk space on x64 machines. Most of this space will be reclaimed after installation. Microsoft has posted Windows Vista Service Pack 1 Beta White Paper, describing every detail on Microsoft's latest SP.

No, it won't be the new XP until all of the liberals in here buy new PCs and actually TRY the OS, rather than just slamming it based on what they see in mac commercials.

Good news of course, but will there actually be any new feautures as a result of this? I'm thinking specifically of all which was dropped along the way to Vistas release, e.g. a new file system. That's what I want, not just more bug fixes.

I'm sorry -- you seem to have confused TechPowerUp with FreeRepublic. Anyway, 7GB and 12GB?!? What the hell? Those are packed sizes, right? Otherwise, Microsoft better be sending me a damn Blu-ray player so that I can read their damn Blu-ray install disk.

Oh, and people do have a reason to complain. Vista looks pretty, but the bugs are many. You don't have to try it to know this. There are many competent people with nothing to gain who thankfully inform others. I don't know about you, but spending $300 on Vista Ultimate to just verify all of the bugs and problems with WGA seems ridiculous to me. Especially when XP works great, and will continue to work great until MS gets Vista right.

Aye -- I should know, I'm a developer working on several apps for Vista-based systems right now. It's been a pain in the ass to even get started, mostly since the IDE I'm required to use has been judged incompatible due to Vista's subtle changes, yet I'm still required to somehow program apps for a Vista-based system. Figure that one out.

I tried Vista, I do not like it. I have always maintained it COULD be a good OS, eventually. In the meantime I will stick to XP.

True. I know many people who program and have had the exact same things. Personally I think Vista should still be in beta development stages.

i love that most people who got vista without a new pc got it for gaming. especially after they found those graphics/ memory paging issues. my barracuda can't even work 5.1 surround on vista, while in xp it gets detected as an x-fi in bf2. they definetly need to do some work before christmas comes around

Improves the logon experience by removing the occasional 10-second delay between pressing CTRL-ALT-DEL and the password prompt displaying.

BTW :

There are three options for installing SP1. One of them is Express.

"Express. Requires an Internet connection but minimizes the size of the download by sending only the changes needed for a specific computer (approximately 50 MB for x86-based operating systems)."

The Express install will allow you to install SP1 most likely with a limited amount of space on your Vista partition since itdetects and downloads based on the needs of the individual PC.

The reason why the standalone setup is so big is that is consists of all the languages. Users will be able to download and install the standalone setup package regardless of language since it will include all the language files in the install file. It is a trade off for having a larger setup file size.

Bf2141 doesn't recognize X-Fi in Vista. BF2142 is the buggiest game I've ever played (but really fun). Half-Life 2 Deathmatch, on the other hand, does recognize 5.1.

As for all the dimwitted libs on the fuck MS bandwagon in here, you're all complaining because your heard from some guy who owns Vista, that there are some problems running Windows XP 32-bit programs on the new OS. Vista is a cool OS. Sure it uses more resourses, but so does every relase of a new OS. When XP first released, most people didn't even use 1 GB of ram. "!"!"! OMG Windows XP uses 128MB of RAM"!"!"! In 4 years from now, when everyone is using 16gb ram and made for vista software, you dorks will find will start picking apart the next OS, saying how perfect Vista is. And forget about all the bitching in 2007. Typical of dems. mark my words

Personally I find that appalling. First off, how can that everyone on this forum hates Vista...I use it...I like it better than XP. Also, dems....wtf? How do you know our political affiliations, I usually support Right wing ideas, but some things I support on the Left wing to. Please don't generalize about people, especially in a place like the internet where anyone can see what you wrote.

As far as SP 1 Beta, if they give me better performance I'll take it. I don't care if it's like half a frame per second....any performance boost is welcome. Also, I could get used to task manager coming up on Ctrl+alt+del instead of the screen. Last grip with Vista....the way you get around folders feels like sh*t. Idk why, but xp's seems much more intuitave, not as pretty of course, but more intuitve. So fix those two problems and give me more performance..I'll make sure I have 12 GB on my hdd (he!! I'd make sure I'd have 30 GB free)

Somebody can't read....

techPowerUp != FreeRepublic.com

techPowerUp.com ---> Where you are right now.

FreeRepublic.com ---> Where you should be.

Obviously, you've made a mistake about your choice of destination for a web forum. Please recheck your address bar for the proper address -- it should be reading "http://freerepublic.com".

If it is not reading that, please contact your system administrator for assistance.

I think the topic was supposed to be "Announcing Windows Vista Service Pack 1 Beta" am I wrong?

Telling others to go to another forum doesn't seem like the right topic? I'm confused. Do I need to change the thread title? Maybe I'm reading it wrong?
