Sony to Discontinue 60GB PlayStation 3 in Europe

Sony has announced that once the current stock of 60GB PlayStation 3 consoles is sold out, European regions will only have access to the newly introduced 40GB model. The shock decision comes after Sony Europe announced a price cut for the 60GB model to GBP 349 / EUR 499, which the company said was in response to consumer feedback. The company also unveiled a 40GB PS3 due to go on sale this Wednesday, but gave no indication at the time when the 60GB model will be discontinued.
Quote:
Our offering in the UK market place for Christmas are the two SKU's announced on Friday, but as the 60GB stock is depleted the GBP 299 40GB SKU will be the only version available going forward,
said a spokesperson for SCEE. Sony has already phased out the 60GB model in North America, where an 80GB unit sells for USD 599 with a copy of MotorStorm.

so this is sonys tactics for slashing the price of the ps3, the only way they think they can lower it is by de-grading it. why not just lower it with the 60GB hard drive because no matter what way you look at it they still make a huge profit on every console sold

I think it's ok to phase out certain models.

So they got a new supplier deal on cheap 40GB and 80GB drives. Helps to reduce production costs. There is no need for an extra 60GB version. Makes production line, advertising, warehousing and retail shelf stocking, etc. so much more timeconsuming and expensive.

Keep it simple. I'm ok with SONY's move.

Sony is losing money on every console they sell...that has been a known fact since it was released.

I never liked the 60Gb idea...seems like too much space for a console...but that's just me.

However what I don't like is that they are also getting rid of PS2 backwards compatibility with the new model as there is no extra PS2 emulator chip (or whatever it is).

Well if they discontinue this, how are we going to be ble to get the extra features of it (e.g. PS2 compatability + WiFi) if we can't afford it ATM?

It still has wifi and for the stuff they took out, meh, good riddance. If you do need more hard drive space, its piss simple to upgrade to an even higher capacity one, being just standard notebook drives.

This PlayStation 3 model does NOT feature:

* Backwards Compatibility with PS2 Games
* Memory Stick Card Readers
* SACD Playback
* Ethernet Cable
* 4 USB Ports, this model features 2.

the only reason that sony lost money through selling the consoles was A: the price, no one wanted nor could afford the £600 starting price that sony asked for, therefore B: their advertising campaign was a huge waste of money. free dvd's for everyone showing us what we couldnt afford!!

It isnt half assed, less featured or anything, the fact that you think such shows you dont know what you are talking about.

It has 20 gbs less, but 20 gbs more than the 360 premium when first introduced. You still get PS2 backwards compatibility, but from what I know, its not as many games, as of right now due to software emulation, but that is due to change. I sincerely doubt you or anyone else barking about backwards compatibility bought this console or will buy this console for such a reason. If you did, you made a 600 dollar mistake with that line of thinking.

Fact of the matter is, it offers a variation for consumers, one being less than the other. No differences otherwise noticeable if you ask me.

"The reduced price, however, will come at the cost of a few features: the console will not include the multi-memory port and has two USB ports instead of four. Most notably, the system won't sport any backwards compatibility with PlayStation 2 games.

Sony said the latter feature was cut because of "reduced emphasis placed on this feature amongst later purchasers of PS3"."
You didn't read up either did you?

the hdd on a ps3 can be upgraded freely by the consumer themselves, for the value of the price reduction the consumer can purchase a 2.5inch 120gb hdd and slot that into the ps3 themselves.

Norway must have some huge import tax. Why would sony charge norwegians more when compared to the rest of europe. Its a shame they dont have some trading pact with the EU which would have eneabled cheaper PS3s.

Yes it has WiFi(gigabit) and yes sadly Norway isnt EU so they get to charge whatever they want. But in the big picture Income wise we make alot of money in comparison so it all kinda balances out(except when you convert it to another currency then it looks scary....)
