prevent others from taking control of your computer

Everyone should Disable Remote Assistance to protect themselves.

How to Disable Remote Assistance (Win XP)

Remote Assistance is a Windows XP feature that allows remote access to your computer, commonly for troubleshooting purposes. Remote Assistance is set up to be "enabled" as the default setting in windows xp so microsoft can access your computer remotely to help you fix problems but unfortunately it also leaves you wide open to be hacked as long as it is activated.

How To Disable Remote Assistance:

Go to Start\ Settings\ Control Panel\ System.

On the System Properties window, select the Remote tab, then click Settings.

Make sure that the Allow users to connect remotely to this computer box is not selected, then click Apply, then OK. Remote Assistance is now turned off.

This method prevents Remote Assistance from being used, but it only disables it and doesn’t completely turn it off. I would say this gives you a medium level of protection because it can still start when disabled, if it's called properly by experienced hackers.

It's better to completely turn it off rather than just disable it.

How To Turn Off Remote Assistance altogether rather than just Disable it:

Click Start\Run then type in services.msc and hit return.

Scroll down to Remote Desktop Help Session Manager and right click on it.

Select properties then select disabled in the drop-down menu.

Click stop then Click OK

This method prevents the service from starting up at all and gives you the highest level of protection from anyone remotely accessing your computer.

You can also disable it in xp by going to Services.msc, and disabling the Remote Desktop Help Session Manager service.

Click Start--> Run--> type services.msc and hit return--> Scroll down to Remote Desktop Help Session Manager--> right-click on it--> select properties--> select disabled in the drop-down menu--> click stop--> Click OK

That completely stops the service altogether.

it is the same thing as i explained but my way is quicker and my way also perminently disables remote assistance.

Note: As Wile E points out in post #11 below, my way only disables it and doesnt completely turn it off and it can still start when it's in manual, if it's called properly. I think his way is the surest way to protect your computer.

I know, I was offering an alternative. But I should point out, my method prevents the service from starting at all. Your method sets it to manual. It can still start when it's in manual, if it's called properly.

Yup. The only way to completely deactivate it is to stop the service and disallow it from ever starting up.

Or like me, use nlite and strip out the service lol.

Don't forget Remote Registry as well guys.

I'm just saying.. this is pretty useless.

I can put trojans in any piece of software I like.. and because is 100% undetected method, you won't be finding anything in there.

Common sense can help you a little, but at the end of the day if you scan something you've downloaded and it's fully clean, whatcha gonna do?

Regardless Cash, NOTHING is 100% un-detectable. Whether it's detected thru software, or just because you notice your PC acting strangely, it gets detected. And if I detect one, I don't go messin around trying to remove it. I wipe everything and start new.

If you scan it there, nothing picks it up.
