Walgreens to Offer Movie-Burning Kiosks Next Year

Thanks to some new, more lenient legislature on copy protection, retailers around America can do more liberal things with digital content. The Walgreens convenience store and pharmacy is looking to beat rival CVS by being the first to offer DVD-burning kiosks. In one sense, it adds convenience. By burning your own movies legally, you save a buck or two. However, it also allows old movie makers to put their content on said kiosks. Since most old black-and-white films, independent films, and b-grade horror films are not nearly popular enough to deem mass-manufacturing feasible or profitable, this new method of distributing said movies would possibly curb piracy, give old movie-makers fresh profits and popularity, and get classic movies to the consumer. Walgreens hopes to have the first movie-burning kiosks operational next month.

Sounds sweet, burns the dvd on the spot as you buy it. Defiantly the independent films will get a boost. Now I wonder how much it costs the movie producers to put a movie on the kiosk.

Not a bad idea... I wonder how many people would be willing to put up with the wait involved with disc burning though.

Great idea. Can't wait to burn something like "The Brain from Planet Arous" circa 1957.

shouldn't be any worse than waiting for you perscription which you have to do anyways. not to mention it is a retail store, isn't getting you to wait around kind of the idea? that way you see something you don't need or were looking for but will by anyways because it's there (walmart is king of this, theres a reason the tire shop is located next to sporting goods)

but overall I love the idea of being able to get movies that are less popular. many of my favs are impossible to find.

I know this is a little off-topic, but I didn't realize that all Wal-Marts put their Tire dept next to Sporting Goods. I thought it was just a coincidence with the 2 Wal-Marts near me. lol

Back on topic: I don't know what to think of this. What happens if you get a bad burn, or if the machine is bumped while burning your movie?

Or if your burning process is accidently interrupted by another burning process if the there was one machine doing multiple burns. Think "fight club" everyone!

[about Tyler splicing frames of pornography into family films]
Narrator: So when the snoody cat, and the courageous dog, with the celebrity voices meet for the first time in reel three, that's when you'll catch a flash of Tyler's contribution to the film.
[the audience is watching the film, the pornography flashes for a split second]
Narrator: Nobody knows that they saw it, but they did...
Tyler Durden: A nice, big, cock...
[several audience members look rattled, a little girl is crying]

I think its a great idea. It definately beats going to amazon.com and adding your name to a list of people that want a movie to be put on dvd and hoping it happens. What I had to do for Heart Break Ridge.

Eh, Ill still take free over cost any day. The only thing that sucks is, you cant edit the movies truly to make them a great dvd. I wish I had studio encoding software.
