Samsung Reveals 64GB SATA II SSDs for High-end PC and Server Storage Markets

Samsung Electronics has become the first in the industry to sample 1.8-inch and 2.5-inch 64GB solid state drives (SSD) with a super-fast native SATA II interface. With a sequential write speed of 100MB/s and sequential read speed of 120MB/s, the SATA II SSD is poised to expand the market for solid state drives from notebook PCs to corporate servers and other high-performance storage applications. Samsung’s SATA II SSD combines a 50 nm-class, single-level-cell (SLC) 8Gb flash chip with a Samsung proprietary, high-speed SATA controller and supporting software.

The 64GB SATA II SSD is based on Samsung’s cutting-edge NAND technology with dramatically improved performance specs that are taking system performance to a whole new level of efficiency

These will still need a mounting adapter, if you want to mount them in a 3.5" bay. I think that's what he meant, anyway.

Why is Samsung pioneering in all new types of hard drives? They released the Hybrid drive and they have the SSDs. I'd really like to see other manufacturers release these babies. I had an option from AlienWare to get 2 x 64GB SSDs in RAID now that should be a nice config eh?

They make them, but you can fit an enormous amount in a 2.5" drive and 5-6 2.5" drives will fit in a 3 x 3.5" bay.

Well it stands to reason that the company that makes the memory modules would want to promote the standard, so being the first to market with a product or offering the best of the available models helps show the strength of memory. But samsung also also makes hard drives, Im not sure if they actually manufacture their own or if its done by a third party, but they have their own hard drive series so creating hybrids off of what they already have is a smart idea cause sales would help both departments

But you really don't need 3.5in drives with SSDs because you dont have to worry about mounting multiple platters on spindles and a motor to push them up to speed, since the media is all stored on the memory modules. If you could get the kind of density you can with a 3.5in drive in a 2.5in package we would have already. So even if you had to buy a 2.5 in to 3.5in drive bay adapter, it's still not a bad way to go...If desktops and laptops used the same standards it would only help bring costs down, which is something SSDs drastically need.

And as jizzler mentioned, you can get much more 2.5in drives in a system then you can with 3.5in drives. A 3x 5.25 to 3.5 adapter gets you 4 drives mounted one on top of the other, so you could easily get 8 or more 2.5in drives in the same space, and if done sideways you could probably get much more in the same space.

I only own one Samsung drive which is the Hybrid one and must add it works pretty sweet so I could guess the SSDs are even better. I believe my drive is in SATA I not to mention the SSDs in SATA II.

I get 180MB/s burst, 61,4MB/s avarage read and 14.2ms random acces for my 250GB Samsung drive. Would be nice to know yours. Screenshot welcome too on the score.

When it comes back from AlienWare I will had a problem with Windows Vista and I'm suspecting it might be some setting on the board. Been a week without it but I will gladly post the results

I wouldn't dabble with SSD drives just yet. Everybody is touting extremely long longevity of these drives (2,000,000+ hours MTBF ?) but I simply won't believe it until there is few years of reliable testing/benchmarking and some passage of time to confirm more accurate rates of failure of these puppies in standard environment (for example, 2-3 years of running in Joe Schmo dusty and superheated Dell box)

You act like it has moving components! Just take DUCT Tape and secure it to the side of the case! LoL Or even better duct tape it to an aluminum heat sinc.

Given the incredible long life of memory, its a pretty safe assumptions and probably safe estimate, that these have longevity. Jumping on the bandwagon only increases supply and demand and Im hoping, as such, it will lower prices. Typically, its not like that, with few adapters causing companies to lower the prices then a mass buy by the consumer.
